Posting a bird ID without a picture is the height of folly, I know but this is driving me nuts! I've scoured all the bird databases online and can't come up with anything. I had a bird today that looked just like a downy woodpecker, acted like a downy but where a downy is usually white this one was an orange/brown color. I was too busy gaping at it to get its picture but it was very interested in my suet. Has anyone heard of an orange variant downy? Thanks!
bird ID without pic help!
Only thing that comes to mind would be maybe a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, bigger than a Downy though. It may return to your suet feeder, good luck!
I guess it may have been a bit bigger than a Downy. I'll look at more pics of Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers...it didn't match the one in my bird book but I know they can have many "looks". The one I saw didn't seem to have any red on it. Thanks!
If it were an immature you might not have seen any red. I know this bird on the right is a bit blurry but it's a good comparison. Not my photo.

Here is one from your state!

A Hairy Woodpecker in New York that had white areas replaced by brown (LaFrance 1983) might have been stained, although genetically brown-breasted ...

Interesting...could be an odd Hairy or YB Sapsucker. I'll just keep my fingers crossed that it comes back and I can snap a pic. Thanks to all for your help!
