I have a yellow ginger given to me by Tropicana in a round-up. It grew well this year and bloomed a bit. But it is too cold outside for it and the pot is WAY too big to move.
Can it be dug and stored? Until spring? Actually I have already dug it and awaiting somebody with more know-how than me. I am in zone 7a but it's been more like 6b this year.
ginger challenge
You can store the rhizome in slightly moist sphagnum moss till Spring.
If it is large, you can divide it into smaller sections and start the plants indoors.
thank you so much.
You're very welcome!

Hey woodspirit,
I have a couple of questions. Has the ginger been outside in a pot up until now? And was the rhizome still firm when it was dug up? It has been really cold here, and I know it's much colder in the mountains, I brought the gingers in a long time ago.
When you do repot the rhizome, remember to keep it on the dry side, you really want to keep the rhizome dormant this time of year . Please wait to split the rhizome into smaller pieces until April, Hedychium Flavenscens is way out of range for Southern Appalachia and it really would be best to divide it in the spring. I am not sure that dividing the thing won't kill it this time of year,so I REALLY hope you read this in time. I am not trying to contradict Metrosideros advice for those in warmer climates, but our combination of cold and humidity is especially hard on tropicals.
hope that helps
It was in a sun-room that got quite cool but didn't freeze. They seem firm. I dug them, put them in fine wood shavings I had, dampened them slightly and put them in the basement which is heated but cool. My spousal unit has 4 perennial fuschias down there and he will dampen the ginger when he waters the others. I hope this works. I will keep checking them to make I sure I don't see any stress. Thanks for the advice.
