A lot of people mistakenly plant these along walkways and driveways. They fit for the first year or so. After that, the leaves will reach 3 ft + out into the pathways. Problem is there are thorns on the lower side of the stem.
Native coontie are more cold-hardy and no thorns.

Mine escaped the cold and I also agree that it's not a walk-way plant. These puppies get huge. Mine is over 8' tall and even wider.

Yes, that is true. A lot of things in my garden have slowed down. Some to a complete stop, as in dead!
