Questions about German Chamomile

Hammond, LA(Zone 8b)

First off, I have never grown any herbs other than Rosemary. Please forgive my (possibly silly) questions.

1 - Which part of the plant do you use for teas? The foliage or the flowers?

2- Can this be grown indoors year round?

3 - What are good companion plants for this plant?

Thanks in advance : )

Hi Jennifer. You use the flowers of German chamomile for tea. They smell faintly of green apples and it is a delicious tea. My German chamomile variety, Bodegold, grows to 3 feet tall and would not make a good houseplant. It also is an annual, meaning once it goes to seed, the plant is done with its life cycle. However, it is a very abundant self-sower. Let a few flowers go to seed and you will have chamomile forever! And it can spread quite happily. I like chamomile planted with roses. The airy foliage and small flowers contrast nicely with roses. Best of luck to you.

Thank you for your advice. I would love to have a nice area overflowing with Chamomile. And the roses sound perfect!
