Strange growth on roo, what is it?

Conroe, TX

Someone I know butchered some of their roos and one had this strange growth on the breast. Here is a picture, does anyone know what this could be.

Here is another picture. It also looks red toward the back side or bottom area. Very strange looking.

The only thing they noticed about this roo when it was alive is that it had an injured leg so it wouldn't put pressure on one leg. And it didn't seem to want to sit like chcikens do sometimes.

Breast blister?

What's inside it?

An injured leg would match with the breast blister syndrome.

I don't know what is in it, but I'll ask.

Okay, they haven't cut into it yet so not sure what is in it. He said he doesn't think it is a breast blister because they have had those on chickens before and this doesn't look like previous ones.
I'm thinking maybe a tumor?

I am thinking I would not be in a hurry to eat it.. Sorry..

It is so red, I would think of an infection of some sort - from a splinter, perhaps?

Disturbing.

Long ago, a grocery store worker said that when they got in an order of chickens, they'd sort through and package whole the birds that didn't have tumors. The birds that did were then cut up and packaged as pieces. There was something about odd holes you could find in grocery store chicken, but I don't remember the details.

This idea has never left me...

Scary!

is that why my package of chicken was cut like little snakes instead of nice clean cut chunks of tenderloin? ewwww. I know a couple butcher's... I'll have to ask them!

Please do ask,

Did you buy chicken tenders? They're strips.

I've given everyone an upset stomach, so sorry.

it was a package of chicken tenderloin from our local supplier to the grocery stores... but i noticed the last package where they normally are clean cuts these looked like some kid had hacked the poor chicken up then sold the meat. Normally they are about 1/3 the size of the chicken breasts nice clean cuts, very little fat on them. These definitely weren't.

na.. no upset stomach here.. mostly I was leery of grocery store food anyways for various reasons. In fact i just bought another package of Chicken breasts from the store a bit ago after reading this. I can't afford the chicken at the meat market & still not sure of killing my own.. done it before but the meat was tough & I didn't like it. I have a few bantam roo's that are on their way to the freezer tho if they keep up visiting the neighbor lady's yard.

Keep a doomed chickkie in a tiny space for three weeks and feed, feed, feed, to make tender, you know that.

I think If I had a chick like that guy, I'd bury him and plant a tree...

and chopping meat isn't a glamorous job, maybe the chopper was... well, something.

looks to me like a blister from roosting. cochins tend to get that red in the skin alot from mites maybe? not sure when mine had it we used adam's flea and tick spray and after a time or 2 the redness went away. i think it is kinda like a reaction to the mite bites.

hmm.. grandma just always went out.. picked out the roo that ticked her off the worst, picked him up, rung his neck & away to the kitchen we went. I might have to try that with these guys..
