I think my EE ate my earring?

Bridgewater, ME

One of my EE`S is so friendly and she follows me around shile I`m doing my chores,She was on the top nesting box watching me and I bent over to pick up a egg and she grabed my ear and the earring came off I don`t now if she swallowed it or it fell the in the shavings,I looked around on the floor but I knew that was hopeless,so she may have a 14 caret gold birthstone earring in her crop or belly. Its a small earring but I`m worried it might do something to her insides.DH bought them for me years ago and I have only taken them off the clean them.He says I need to stay out there untill she poops and check it(like thats going to happen)I suppose this is the weirdest thing that has happened to me since having my chickens.

If you really want to know, you could have her x-rayed.

You know porkpal if it wouldn`t cost so much that was in my thoughts for a second.

Or make her wear chicken diapers for a few days....

my my that little chicken is worth her weight in Gold ROFL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't know whether an ear ring could make it out of the crop. How big was it?

Lodi, United States

They do massage impacted crops and get things out of them....

It was a stud so its pretty small.

She is such a pretty girl and looks so innocent too.

My granddaughter who is 3 swallowed a nickle. I got the privilege of checking all her poops till I "found" it. They had her xrayed and it showed up plain as day. I told her mother she should frame that xray. I saved the nickle. I plan to drill a hole in it and put a chain through it and give it to her when she's older for a necklace.

If that was my earring, I'd confine that chicken for at least a week and check all her poops till that earring came through. Just use plastic gloves to do the looking. I parted the poops with a popsickle stick and then just pitched it. :) I would think it would transition through her digestive track faster than a human. It took my granddaughter 3 days to pass the nickle. The doctor said it could take a week.

Since the earring is metal maybe you could run a strong magnet over the poops ?? Or use one of those long handled metal detectors to find it.

Good luck!

I know I shouldn't laugh but this thread is just tickling my funny bone. Maybe your hen wanted to be prettier! They do seem to like shiny things. My guess is that it's in the shavings. Metal detector might work if it's a magnetic type of metal. Sorry, I can't stop giggling...

They do like shiny things. My hens are always pecking at the zipper on my coat. :)

I was thinking, even if it made it through the crop, would it make it out of the gizzard?

I find you lucky she went after your earrings.. mine always go after my eyeballs...

Kingman, AZ(Zone 7a)

Sorry Green, but I was looking for an older thread and ran across this one... I just have to ask...Did you find the earing??

Rankin, IL(Zone 5a)

I saw this pop up and thought.. wow that chicken held that earring a LONG time.. lol

I didn't see this thread when it was new, or I would have suggested taking the chicken to an airport and pushing her through the scanner! The people one, not the wallets one.

Bridgewater, ME

No I never did see it again,I was hopiing when I clean the coop this spring maybe I will see something sparkleing in the manure, stanger things have happened. My earings all have locks on them now because she still does that if she can get a chance.

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

I would have kept looking through the shavings.. my feeling is it's there somewhere. Unless you saw her swallow it..

Sorry this happened to you.

When I was 9 I swallowed a quarter to keep my brother from getting it.. LOL It was never recovered.. so I'm worth at least two bits.. LOL

Rankin, IL(Zone 5a)

Oh ZZ... thinking about it now.. aren't you glad you haven't ever seen it?
..
I would put you in at a little more than 2 bits though.

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL @ Fran... I agree.. and I DON'T want a visual.. LOL

Bridgewater, ME

ZZ I can beat the quarter story, when I was four I got in a ladies pocket book and took her 100.00 dollars and fed it to our neighbors cow that would eat anything. My mother told me that she had been saving for a long time to get her tubes cut and tied so she wouldn`t have anymore kids(there was four of us) so she had to give the money she had been saving to the laldy that come to sell door to door. That was 54 years ago so you know how tough it was to save a hundred dollars back then.

Rankin, IL(Zone 5a)

WOW.. bet that lady never left her purse laying around again.. wonder if your dad dug through cow patties for a few days?

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

OMG that does top my story! LOL Big time!

Richmond, TX

Paper currency is no match for a cow's digestion.

Clarkson, KY

Kingman, AZ(Zone 7a)

Oh wait.. I don't really remember.. somebody told me.. yea thats it.. it is a yarn from years past.. lol

Langley, WA(Zone 7b)

Well, Green, I guess now we all know why your mom wanted to have her tubes tied!!!!!

Are earrings magnetic? Maybe you could get a magnet and see if you can get the earring to come back up and out her beak!

Bridgewater, ME

It was such a small earring I would never find it.
