Looked through archives/couldn't find much on runner ducks

Alba, TX(Zone 8a)

As above, I looked through the archives and couldn't find much on runner ducks. Does anyone have these? Any comments or experiences with these ducks would be helpful. We are not ready to have ducks yet, but DH wants ducks and found a photo of runner ducks. Now he wants runner ducks when we do get ready for ducks (not for a couple of years maybe). We want to know if they are fairly tame and stay in place.

We had runners, or they may actually have been crossbreds. Their posture looked a little lax. They were friendly and layed a LOT of eggs. They do not fly so keeping them home was fairly simple. We found them entertaining.

There are quite a number of people on Backyard Chickens duck forum that have runners. They love them!

Lodi, United States

Border Collies love them too.

Dang...I think there are about 3 people on the forum who've mentioned them...was it kenboy, jyl, and ???.

Hopefully they'll chime in...

We use to keep at least one all the time. We have no ducks at this time. Next spring we will try to get a few ducks and one or two goslings.

Thanks, guys! Entertainment is good! My job can get verrrrry stressful! I have a corgi who will probably love them too.

I should have said that one reason we kept at least one is because they seem to assume the role of leader of the flock, at least of the hens, and we managed to somehow teach them to take the rest of the flock in at night or out of areas we didn't want the ducks in. All we had to say was IR, take the girls in or IR, get them out of that flower/garden bed. They would round up the rest of the hens and do as requested. Please don't ask me how we did it, it just seemed to happen. We think they are among the most intellegent of the ducks.

IRs may be fairly good layers for some folks but we didn't find that to be the case. But they do not fly. Their wings are so tiny. Some do not even like to be in very much water.

Thanks, leaflady! I think I might be starting to agree with DH. We will keep them on our agenda!
