Hummingbird and Knats

Manzanita, OR(Zone 8b)

I was photographing one of my hummingbirds while she was sitting on top of a tree about 20 ft. from my backyard and when she flew into the air, I kept snapping the photos.

To my surprise, after I'd downloaded them, a few of the pictures showed the hummer was catching knats in the air!

II forgot to tell you that these photos were cropped pretty well.

I love this 7D!!! I've been photographing my hummers for three years and have never been able to catch a knat in a photo.

This female hummer showed up in early spring and the tip of her upper bill had been broken off but it doesn't seem to have bothered her at all.

When she returned to her perch on top of the tree, she looked so proud of herself.

Wonderful shots, duc. I especially love the first one.

duc, I observed this last summer. There was a swarm of gnats at the corner of my gutter where some water had collected. Two Ruby-throats spent a lot of time over a couple of days catching them. First time I had observed them catching insects.

Thanks everyone.

Dirt, your little girl is beautiful. Hope you're not going to float away in all this rain! I've had one of my male hummers here for 2 days now and he won't let the other two at the feeder. Guess he's telling them to move on because he's staying where he is.
