Bell Pepper Question

Allen Park, MI(Zone 6a)

A question from a friend

For the last 5 years i have planted green peppers. I get lots
of small ones but the seeds are for large thick walled peppers. It
doesn;t seem to matter where in the yard they are, the result is the
same. What am i doing wrong? Thanks.

paulgrow, I;m no expert but my experience the past 2 years with bell peppers has been that there seem to be several possibilities.
(1) is whether the variety is suited for that part of the country and for that yard. I planted many varieties, but only a couple actually made nice big peppers for me. Like your friend, I also tried them in different spots. It seemed that which variety it was made more difference than anything else.
(2) it takes a long time for the peppers to get full sized. Some varieties in my yard, the peppers were on the plant for a month before they finally stopped growing larger and started ripening.
(3) If they are like other fruits, the more on the plant, the smaller they will all be. Judicious thinning of a large crop might help the remaining ones grow larger.

I have one variety that is working for me and I will continue to try different ones to see if there are a few others that will be dependable in my garden.

I hope this will be helpful for your friend!

Tina
