Hi,
Does anyone know of any good botanical or horticultural books on vegetables and their seeds? I have lots of growing books but would like to know more about viability, storage requirements, gathering, etc.?
Thank you,
Susan
Vegetable Book Question
susandonb1141, I have quite a few veg gardening books that I've accumulated over the years as I am a read-a-holic.
Bizarrely enough I've found that some of the catalogs, for example Territorial Seeds, have a whole pile of exactly the info you are looking for. And you can call them if you have any questions. For me, being able to call and ask a specific question or cite the text to someone here at Dave's is best. Every year I get confused about planting various types of OP corn in my garden. I always call Territorial and they have someone to set me straight. You'd think they'd recognize me after the third or fourth year I've called in with nearly the same question every year! That being said, I bought a book by Eliot Coleman at a used book store that I have found to be pretty good. I'm at work and don't have it with me, but I think the tittle is Four Season Harvest.
There are so many good books out there, I'm sure others have their own favorites. I'm also interested in hearing what they are =~).
I've got "the Seed Starters Handbook" by Nancy Bubel, it is okay. You might want to take a look at "Seed to Seed" by Suzanne Ashworth, I've had it recommended to me and it is on my wish list. If you go to Amazon.com, search books, and type in "Seed" you get several, including the ones I've mentioned, with reviews you can read.
I looked at my Bubel book - it has a chart of average viability for common garden seeds. It doesn't have that information for common flower seeds.

This is great info. Thank you. I would love to keep this conversation going. I am a horticulture major at college here and mostly we learn about woody plants, perrenials, etc. But my husband and I have been produce farmers for 7 years now and I am really interested in more of the botanical info on vegetables.
Thank you I will check out the references you both have suggested.
Susan
