Strange cold weather question............

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

With all this cold weather, our garage got quite chilled as well. We have a refrigerator freezer in our garage and all our ice cream and gelato has turned to mush soup.

Any reason why this would happen. It's like it's not freezing anymore.....and we just bought it in June!

I wouldn't think the cold did that to it but maybe? Perhaps there were power brownouts or surges. It apparently has quit working. As it was new in June, I suspect warranty will cover it. The company you purchased from should have a repairman.

I hate to say it but the quality of the new appliances keeps me attached to my vintage chest freezer and my Kelvinator frostfree refrigerator ~ serial number 1! LOL Please let me know what you find out...

I found out why the freezer was off.......apparently the cold air for the refrigerator is called for from the freezer, and when the garage gets so cold that the refrigerator is happy, it does not call for cold air. And the freezer has no reason to turn on the compressor.

To remedy that, we cranked up the refrigerator section to high cold. Compressor came on, and freezer is back in business.

YEAH!

Thankfully, most winter temps are not that low here in normal weather.

An interesting piece of information. Good for you!

morganc...who told you that about the refrigerator? Sorry...my DH worked on refrigerators for a long time and that doesn't sound right to him.

Depending on the unit, it does sound correct. As long the thermostat is satisfied, the unit will not come on. Newer units that have two thermostats, one in the freezer and one in the cooler, will start the compressor if either one is calling. Older or cheaper models only have one thermostat and if the cooler stays below the setting in the cooler, the compressor will not come on and the freezer can warm up to the same temp. as the cooler.
