Does anyone grow leaf lettuces in OK? I want to plant some this year and am already confused on varieties. Of course, would love to have the ones that don't get bitter but everything says "under normal growing conditions" that doesn't really fix OK very well.
leaf lettuce in Oklahoma?
I don't have a lot of experience with it but slo growth, heat and dry conditions ruin lettuce. It likes high nitrogen, steady moisture and as the temps rise much above 70, it likes dappled sun or half shade. It usually winters over in my zone and bolts early when day temps stay around 60.
The seeds are cheap so I plan to sow successive plantings every 3 weeks to see how long I can keep some going this spring. You can use it very small too. My goal is to have tomatoes, cukes, lettuce and green onions all at the same time. Maybe this will be the year I can do it.
When I lived in OK waay back when.... we grew Black Seeded Simpson which did well during Springtime & Fall.

This is what I planted last fall and it all tastes pretty good to me.
Endive (received seeds at a RU)
Bronze Lettuce (received seeds at RU)
Parris Island Cos
Black Seeded Simpson (least tolerant of the cold, a bit on the flimsy side, but great taste)
Craquerelle DuMidi
Kentucky Limestone
Lollo Rosso
Tango
Red Rapids
Grandpa Admire's
Buttercrunch
Thanks so much, I am going to try a few this spring.
