You can order the 3.8 bales of ProMix at Ace Hardware. They are 34 dollars a piece. I just picked up my annual 4 bales .. now my utility room looks normal. If you go on a Thursday you can get a 10% discount. My 4 bales with the discount only cost $130.93. I always get 4 bales in January and usually have 1/2 a bale left once winter sets in.
If you aren't familiar with ProMix you might want to look into it. You only need to mix up the amount you need with water .. sifted its a great seed starting mix. It's very root friendly and also very light, even when soaking wet which makes it great for hanging baskets.

Been using it since the 1970's when I had a GH; I buy mine at Walterboro Feed and Seed.
I used to buy mine there but was just too far to drive .. was so delighted to find ace had it.

Beaufort is probably the only commun ity in the USA that does not have an Ace Hardware. The Ace's near my son's home in FL have the most amazing nurseries too.
There is one on Hilton Head .. that's surely closer than Walterboro?

Only as the crow flies. The one on HHI is close to the south end of the island. It takes me a minimum of 1 1/2 hours to get there IF traffic is light - which is rare. Walterboro is only an little more than an hour and their prices are the best around. I like doing business with people who charge fair prices. I don't remember what I paid last time but $34 seems high. I do know they have altered the PM formula to put in wetting agents and mycorhizae now which does increase the cost. I was perfectly happy with the old but they did not ask me. LOL
The problem with the older stuff was that it dried out too quickly. I've always paid 30 something since I started buying it .. I think the first time I bought it was at Cross and it was 31 dollars if I remember correctly .. that was many years ago.

There was a learning curve to keeping the original formula moist. But I had used it for soooooo many years I was used to it.
my new local nursery carries it and i had never seen it before. haven't bought any yet...hmmm, maybe i will check into it further.
my landscape this morning looks like the plains of south dakota......
I got a bad feeling that when it finally does warm up it's gonna be really stinky.
X
stinky plants and stinky dead anoles...i got a whiff of some today and it wasn't pretty. the heaviest frost we've had so far was this morning, even though it was 29 and 5 degrees warmer than the past couple of mornings. i have to admit that it was downright beautiful.
john wanted to know if i was going to start cutting down plants tomorrow. i had to explain to him that this was a "winter landscape" and there won't be any whacking going on until spring and i see what's alive. at least our spring isn't too far off...i truly don't know how they handle it up north.
I went online to find the local distributors near here for ProMix. The nearest listed was wholesale only, and they are quoting higher than this price for wholesale, so I'm going to pay through the nose for this I"m sure. is it that good?
They told me they sell it to the Ace Hardwares, and asked where I live, then told me the closest one they sell to that would get it for me from them, and it's within 5 miles.
Once I started using PM I could never go back to just plain dirt. If I plant something like a small tree in the ground or bush, I'll put a good 6 - 8 inches all around in the hole so the plants can grow a good healthy root system before they hit the local stuff.
I think it's worth it. Before I found it local again I drove over 60 miles coming and going to get it.

Forgot to add, get the bales .. it does come in bags, but that is frightfully expensive.

Ardesia that ice was in the marsh????
I wonder what the soil temp is here I think we may be going for a record low, every night has been cold for 2 weeks now. Can't be a good thing for marginally hardy plants. There is a reason I fool with seeds, cheap if they die off. Bad side is they take to much time to grow. I'm going to acquire supplies today to get my seeds going. Looks like I may be growing a few things from seed that I had originally grown from seed and may very well be dead at this point.
For us at least, last night was the last cold night for a while back up over freezing for the for see able future.
The soil temp is 44 and that is the lowest I have seen it here. It will be a very interesting spring to say the least.
BonJon, in addition to X's good idea about buying the bales, there are many formulations of PM now. I have always used the ProMix BX.
That's what I use.
let me check their email
yup. they carry 3.8cu compressed bales of ProMix BX, and the smaller 2.8cu loose bags, BX, HP, and BX with biofungicide
i'm delighted to second all the good things re:pro-mix bx-esp if a wetting agent & mitochondria have been added.i used bx in my gh in ny throughout 70's&80's
but was able to get a 6cuft compressed bale for $34
I too have been using ProMix BX for years and love the stuff. For everything---starting seeds, rooting cuttings, anything that has, or will have, roots. Last year a bale at Hyam's was $38.95, so the price X found at ACE Hardware is really good!
Hey Stono, I looked for you at the Hinkley talk but it was a bit crowded that night. I wanted to congratulate you and your lovely spouse on that nice award you recently received. It was you that received it wasn't it?????? (Just a hunch here.)
Rats, Ardesia! I got there late because of a conflicting Board meeting. Would love to have met you in person (finally!). Hinkley was great, wasn't he? Knowledgeable, humorous, self-deprecating---I really enjoyed his presentation. Guy really knows his stuff! And your hunch was probably correct...we did get some award a few months ago. Not to worry---my vengeance is already planned. Neither of us are lime-lite cravers. In fact, quite the opposite! But I think I've identified the culprit behind the thing, and it's none other than Leslie Brady, whom we both love and respect dearly. Leslie wasn't a "Plant Person" at all when hired by CHS, but she's rapidly becoming one. I plan to donate a heinously invasive (but beautiful) weed for her garden before she learns of the difficulty of control of the thing. Once she's got the message, we'll obviously show her (and help her) eradicate it, and hopefully never wind up in the spotlight again...how embarrassing!
LOL.
Ditto LOL, I am sure the award was justly deserved!
Might I suggest Sweet Autumn Clematis?
X
Now this is REALLY embarrassing; I can't get Sweet Autumn Clematis to grow here.
I was thinking more along the lines of a beautifully presented 1 gal pot of Florida Betaney...(only kidding...wouldn't even do that to a "bad" person...)!
I have a neighbor who thinks the FB flowers are pretty. It takes all kinds.........
Hi everyone, Don't get around here too often, but I read this and wanted to let everyone know that Southern States Farm Supply carries it. And they are all over NC/SC. If your local store doesn't carry it they can get it for you from their supplier. They don't sell it off the website, probably 'cause it's too heavy to ship. But all the stores around here carry it.
Here's the addy to see if there's a store near you.

Roxanne
thanks Roxanne, but I didn't see it on there anywhere.
You won't find it on the website.....You'll have to call a store near you and ask them if they carry it or if they can order it. : )
