First Ecuador Pink Blooms Now!?!

My Ecuador Pink is blooming. It has been in the 20s for the last few nights and this brug decides to bloom. LOL. My brugs are in a GH that is just a plastic one I got off of Ebay for $100. The windows are flaps with velcro that won't close right so I know they have gotten cold. It must be the prayers. :)

It's amazing how many things they'll go through and still bloom. Have you tried putting a small heater or several strands of C-7 or C-9 Christmas lights in with your Brugs? EP looks like it has suffered some frost bite. I hope you come up with some way to warm up the greenhouse or decide to take them indoors. Without heat, the temperature inside the greenhouse won't be much different than the outside temps.

We had 2 freezes that went down to the mid 20s in December and are having the first of 4 consecutive nights of temperatures in the 20s. To make matters worse, the fierce winds today kept the temperature in my greenhouse in the high 39s and low 40s during the day. When I went out to see why, I found that the full tank installed mid-day Sunday was empty. I had to switch to an almost empty tank. I just hope it makes it until morning. Otherwise with a forecast of 23ºF tonight, my Brugs may be in worse condition by morning. By the time I had switched tanks and purged the line, the temperature in the greenhouse had dropped to 34ºF.

The flower does not resemble Ecuador Pink but a B. suaveolens - hybrid. EP has trumpet - shaped flowers with long tendrils.

monika,

I bought them from Buried Treasures in a co-op last summer. Being new to Brugmansia I don't know the differences yet. Here is another pic close up if you can better be able to determine if it is Ecuador Pink or the B. suaveolens. I sure would like to know for sure. Thanks. :)

I didn't want to say anything because I have only seen pictures of EP but that is not the right form.
I do think it is amazing to see blooms over there in such cool conditions.

monika, I am glad you did say something otherwise I wouldn't have known. Thank you.

bettydee, I got a small heater and put it in the GH. I hope it helps. I hope these cold temps don't last too long. I was raised in WV were this would be the norm but not here in GA. :) Oh well, On the bright side the cold temps are getting rid of some of the insects.

My dog came to the door with a squirrel tonight. No, she didn't catch it herself. The poor thing was frozen. These cold temps must have surprised her too and she didn't prepare the nest properly.

Molly it was not my intention to hurt your feelings. Ecuador Pink is a B. versicolor and the flowers have distinctive characteristics like large, pending and of a clear trumpet-shape with very long tendrils. In the summer the color is of a dark Pink but in the fall and early winter, the Pink is pale but the shape of the flower however stays the same.

Have a look at this link: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/3045/
You will see, that the flower shape of your plant is much more funnel-like and the tendrils are shorter and that yours is a complete different cultivar.

monika,

You did not hurt my feelings. I am sincere when I say thank you. :)

After looking at the site above, I see the differences you noted. I'm gonna have to do some sleuthing to see if the others I have are what they are labeled. :)
