Strangely Silkie Serama

Lodi, United States

I am perplexed:

About a month ago, I hatched three little Serama chicks from eBay eggs...they are cute little beggars, even though I fear all are roos. Two are silver and one looks like it will be black. The black one is a stand out--high tail, poofy chest---a real looker. But looking at them this afternoon, it suddenly hit me that it is a silkie. I mean--in every way it looks like a Serama...no extra toes, no feathery legs, nice little single comb--but the plumage is silkie.

Has anyone else had this happen? I know Silkies are reputed to have been used in the creation of the Serama, and ZZ and I both had a chick or two with some feathering on their legs--but this is a perfect little silkie feathered Serama.

I wonder if you can use him in breeding?

Catscan!!! Now you have me perplexed, I researched Serama chickens extensively, over a year before I got ZZ's and I have never heard even a hint that silkies were ever used in the creation of the Serama chicken. I'm not saying your wrong darling, but, could you possible point me to any site that suggests that silkies were used? Your baby sounds very interesting, I'd like to see a pic if possible. Would there be any reason you could not use him for breeding purposes. And why are you buying eggs when I could send you some at no charge... I have twenty in incubators now and have a doz and a half waiting for the incubator. Shame on you...LOL Hay

Catsy, it is most unfair and uncharacteristically sneaky of you not to post a picture of this little one. He sounds positively adorable. I would very much like to see him. I shall report you to the chicken police if you do not post pictoral evidence at once. :-P

I CAN"T! (Wail!)

My camera is broken again....making it very hard to sell surplus roos on craigslist, let alone post picture of deviant Serama chicks...or totally adorable Blue Cochin chicks.

ZZ's Cody may be able to fix it--or I suppose I could buy another one....but you see there is this Suro 24 egg incubator I have my eye on....

Okay, I googled:

People are working to develop this type of Serama...it is unusual, but not undesirable.

BLUE COCHIN chicks!!! Are you going to have some eggs from those someday?

Lodi, United States

Could be....of course I only have two and don't know their sexes yet. One appears light blue....maybe splash. The other may be black. I have named them Cosset and Cuddles.

The eggs were huge!

OK Catsy!!!...You got me going. I have a very handsome serama roo that has been running with the standards for three months. He is very handsome, and I also have a silkie that just started laying last week. Serama silkies, why not? Thanks for the idea!!!...Hay.
