The cold dipped in the 20s last night and this morning I found that the Frostweed was doing an encore burst! This is from one large clump.
Frostweed Encore!
The thumbnail makes it look like a flower! What a fun plant!
I was cleaning up in the bed where I have my little bitty frostweed planted and I think it's alive, just not big enough to do anything yet. We'll see once spring arrives!
That is really neat Sheila and Linda, I am so glad people are noticing more, it is a lot of fun.
If there is anymore that hasn't burst it is sure to this week. The weathermen are saying we won't get out of the 20's Thurs night and Friday. I am planning on covering a few things if it isn't too cold to be out today. I have a clematis and passiflora that are evergreen, then there is my pansies that were a great host to the varigated fritillaries last year. I will definately be bringing in the pots of them.
Yes, Marsh Fleabane is adorable.
Very pretty picture, this may seem funny but I like the scent of the Fleabane.
Ya know, me and my DH talked about the scent and sometimes it smells pleasant, other times it smells like B.O. lol ! We haven't determined why ~ yet !!
I never get bored of seeing the lovely ice formations.
Lovely! The first really put out a lot. The last one is really neat too. Don't you wish you could be there when they do it and watch it form? Like I would ever do that.....since it has to be freezing.
I never get bored with seeing them either. Went out this morning looking for some since everything is frozen out there..... that would be neat to catch one in action!
Might try the video cam on a dry freeze day next year...would be cool.
Just saw this video on youtube. I particularly like the time lapse video of frost weed "blooming". :)

Wow....that is super Dennis, thanks for finding and sharing the link.
That is just great Dennis, thank you very much.
Josephine.
My little Frostweed that I thought was dead has little bitty green sprouts on it!!! I'm so happy!
Excellent Stephanie, I will have more for you at the swap.
Thank you, Josephine. I can have a whole stand of them!
They have so many plus qualities. They are native, perennial, shade or sun, tall, or short if you keep them pruned, a butterfly host plant, and nectar plant for them and bees. They bloom in the fall when not much else is, then they put out those georgeous ice blossums when it freezes. Plus my favorite DGer uses it's name as her ID!!
Thank you Sheila, that is sweet of you to say.
Cheer cheer frostweed is special for all the reasons Sheila mentioned. Are they scented? The flowers are very attractive.
I have never detected any scent either, but they sure are pretty.
great pictures! It looks like the Monarchs like the Frostweed.
Great pictures Linda, it looks like I picked a very good plant for my name.
The butterfly in my shot is the Queen, it mimicks our Monarchs for safety. It looks like there are also some snout butterflies on the blooms in Linda's second shot.
I don't have pictures at hand, but there were hairstreak butterflies nectaring at the Frostweed also last year.
It has to bloom early to make a statement Josephine....if it waited too late, you couldn't see it for the wildflower slope!!
Anyone in the area and especially those of you making the RU in Arlington need to drive by and see it for yourself. Here is a link Josephine has with 12 pictures...it is prettier even in person.
