I have been seeing this guy every couple days. I thought he was just late at leaving, but he is still here.
We sometimes have American Robins stay all winter. (just the nutty ones, I am sure) But to have a Red Winged Blackbird stay...now he is usually our true sign of spring.
There is nothing like spring outside today. 6' F.
What do you all think?
Someone forgot to fly south for the winter
I have never seen one in the winter before, have you?
Never...and we've been seeing different birds earlier or later than normal...
I'm sure it's a cross between the weather and global warming too. I'm sure there are always a few birds of various species that always lag behind too. Guess we got lucky that they chose our yards for our enjoyment...and lucky for them they found food :)
Mmmm, I was hoping for an early spring. Last year we didn't have spring until June. On June 21st we had one day of summer and then fall the rest of the year. Winter was late this year. That could have confused this bird.
Cpartschick, I had a Grackle with an injured wing here, last month. He stay around for a couple of weeks. I don't think he made it with the cold temp we had, cause I don't see it anymore. Might have been caught by an Hawk, that was hanging around.
What I find strange, is my Grosbeaks, and Redpolls haven't arrived yet. The Grosbeaks are usually here the beginning of December, and the Redpolls at the end of December, beginning of January. I still wonder if I'll get to see them. I know it's still early for the Redpolls, so I'll keep watching. No activity at the feeders today, don't see any Hawk around either. I usually have a lots of Doves and Starlings most of the day.
The weather is so weird, the snow has been melting out there, the last few days.
Gee, it is usually colder where you live. At first I thought that this guy may have been injured and that is the reason he stayed. But I have seen him several times and he looks healthy and flies well.
Ah...if birds could talk. Can you imagine what they could tell us?
Can Just imagine what they'd say.;)
Even today...after temps as low as 15 below...our RWBB is still here :)
Susan, I think we both have nutty red-wings!
I am really glad we have the food for them. We are on a lake, near a marshy area with lots of cat tails. This bird seems to be living in the cat tails, (where they nest and live all summer) In the spring and fall we can hear thousands out there. It is really amazing. It is great to see them teaching their young to fly, and attacking anything that comes close to their nest. Including deer and eagles.
Burn, it amazes me the wonderful birds you see in the winter. Keep posting all the great shots.
