Sept 26-last crosses of the year. B.Butterfly x Pink aurea, Pink aurea x Butterfly, Butterfly x Isabella, Isabella x Butterfly. Dr.Sues x Butterfly, Solid Gold x Pink Aurea. Here hopes these all mature before the first frost as I can't possibly bring these all in. Course, I already have some Butterfly seeds planted. Keep your fingers crossed guys. Ahh, by the way, I do have a few aurea's going in the greenhouse to get started on the hybridizing early in the spring when the others are just popping back. Almost forgot, Pink candida x white aurea vice versa as well. Thats it...Sorry I get so excited, but I just can't wait to see what these seeds bring. Would have crossed a few more varieties, but my wife was getting a bit miffed at the shredded flowers in the yard so needless to say she made me stop hybridizing before I got to the doubles and the shredded flowers this go round....
Last aurea crosses of the year
brugman, what is your success rate at getting a pod to set? i ran around like a fool child trying to cross different ones. i was lucky enough to get one to set.
what is the secret?
any help would be appreciated.
jen
Keeping my fingers crossed that they all take. You should have some beauties next year.
Msjen-
Secret...well pollinate them before they open and especially when the pistal is sticky. If the pistal is not sticky-pollinate 2 times a day eve and morn and you should have better success. Also, try to use a rich thick pollen when available. The sparse non fluffy pollen just doesn't do very well. Also be sure to use different species crosses as that seems to help a bit. Still, the bigger a plant the easier it is to set a seedpod on generally. I just hope a few of my crosses take as I just made some I desperately want.
Ahh, it also helps to hybridize after a rain as the pistal or stigma seems to split after a good rain enabling one to place the pollen not only on both sides of the stigma, but in the middle as well as the water/humidity seems to cause the stigma to open up and curl back....though not always.

I've got my fingers crossed for you Brugmansia. Just when is it that you get frost?

sorry, just another site with pictures that also has cuttings and seeds....
Liz,
As for frost-I hopefully only get frost when I want it, but that never seems to be the case. Last year, my Dr.SuesxAurea white seedpods all froze and my Dr.Sues x Culebra seedpods as well as I did not act in time to take cuttings early enough.

I agree with MzM...we had enough cold weather last year to last me for a long time....seems like I spent the entire winter at the gas company filling up propane tanks to keep the GH warm.
