Suprise for me

Campobello, SC

I never knew woodpeckers to be seed eaters. Have seen this little guy about twice a day now for last 3 weeks. Make sense, I guess, with the recent cold spell, insects must be hard to come by.
I think it is a Pileated Woodpecker.

I had one visit my feeder. It hangs on the branch of a dead tree, so I thought it was there because of the tree and just happened to get on the feeder. Maybe not!.

Dennis, that's a Red-Bellied WP...and a handsome one, too! They'll eat just about anything, including other birds' eggs if necessary. One of the prettiest woodpeckers, I think.

Thanks for the correction DebinSC.

Last year a red bellied woodpecker came to the feeder that's in my office window on a regular basis. This year, the whole family (dad, mom, and junior) stops by the feeder. Dad is an everyday visitor; mom and junior more occasional. I love them!

Believe this is a red-bellied woodpecker. They are constant feeders at my supply of black sunflower seeds as well as peanut butter. We hve pileated woodpeckers in this neighborhood, but I have never seen one at a feeder -- they seem to prefer older Loblolly or Slash pines.

My parents live in the mountains, and have tons of woodpeckers at their feeder during the winter. Several varieties. Who knew?
