At midnight, I went outside and stood in the snow. The clouds occluded the full moon, yet a diffuse light illuminated the night. The only sound was the hiss of the fine snowflakes passing through the air. Dancing bunny ran across the yard and through the fence. He sat watching me from the safety of the far side of the box elder tree. I took the tobacco that I bought to bless the yard and held it to the sky and I said to whatever listens, “hear my prayer.”
Sprinkling tobacco accordingly, I said, “ To the East, from where the morning sun comes, I give thanks. To the south from where the warm winds blow, I give thanks. To the West, where the sun sinks to sleep, I give thanks. To the North here the snow clouds grow, I give thanks. For the moon and the stars, for the earth and the seas, I give thanks. For the year that is past and the year that will come, I give thanks. Bless us and grant us peace. Let me live this year with forgiveness, compassion and joy.”
It sounded as if the night gave a sigh and I felt snowflakes kiss my face. A new year has begun.
