Which do you prefer?
Although I like the flexibility that gloves offer I have yet to find a pair that keep my fingers warm. Mittens keep me warm but it's almost impossible to do anything while wearing them...
The verdict is that I end up wearing neither and just deal with frozen hands...
Gloves or Mittens?
gloves
If I am going to be out long, mittens with light gloves underneath.
Large pink mittens for meeting my older son at the school bus.
LOL!!
I'll bet he loves you for that :)
Like to wave at him as the bus approaches.
Ha ha ha too funny! I only wear gloves but if I ever start skiing again I want to try mittens. I have this expensive pair of ski glove sthat usually do the trick at keeping my fingers nice and warm. I'd like to know which socks to wear to keep my toes warm though. Mine are always frozen!

Seriously - only gloves for me. I notice as I age that my fingers and toes get cold easier now. Bought a real nice pair (expensive) from Cabelas last year. Bulky, but warm.
Somebody gave me a pair of down boot liners once...they're like a pair of down filled socks...hunters use them...kept my feet super toasty!
I just bought a warm pair of boots - also from Cabelas. I think 1200 gm of Thinsulate.
I drive a school bus and alls I could picture was a father waving to his son with pink mittens!! lol My warm gloves a re a little bulky as well, I usually only put them on to shovel or clean off the car. Otherwise they are too warm. My toes are always frozen when I'm driving the bus because air comes in right near my feet but there is no heater down there. They literally feel like they are beginning to get frost bite sometiems - even with my waterproof Columbia boots that say they are rated to -10 degrees.
Love merino wool socks! Lightweight, warm, breathable, wicking and very comfy!!

and stylish too!!
wool makes me itchy beyond belief...
Merino is not itchy at all!!
These sweats are great too.

Try battery operated socks which hunters use. Need to find where I stashed my fleece gloves as my fingers have been cold in the knit ones.
Gloves, have the neoprene/ stretch ones with the tiny little rubber circles that grip, use them for driving, I also have snowmobile gloves for shoveling & cleaning the snow around my car, they are waterproof and with a drawstring at the top for keeping out the snow, a bit bulky but the warmest gloves I have.
My faves are the neoprenes, gives me dexterity albeit at the expense of warmth if I really need the dexterity and it's too cold I use a liner (developed by NASA), which has metal flakes in the material to conserve warmth and then put on my neoprenes over them. They add a measure of warmth to any glove I use if need be, the only drawback is they have to stay dry. Cant deal with mittens, restrict my dexterity too much.
In extreme prolonged cold I use a small chem pack which heats up, I wrap it in a few napkins and shove it in a heavy duty version of my faves along with the liner, that's usually what I do when I go fishing in the cold, they are waterproof but hinder dexterity somewhat, (but without them in those conditions it would only take a couple of minutes for anyone's hands to go numb with the cold...)
I have to find some of those battery operated warmers, I'll have to google them. I think I'll try those type of socks too.. I was thinking they might be itchy so I'm glad to hear they aren't. Thanks. : )
Both, in cases of severe exposure or self torture such as deer hunting or sledding. I have an old pair of Army mitten style covers, fur on the backs, deer skin palms, and a soft duck gauntlet, over a goat skin smart-wool lined glove you can endure hours of self imposed enjoyment. LOL Most of the time I just opt out for the dollar store stretchy kids gloves and can usually find a pair in any coat I pull from my closet. It may not be organized but it works for me. Ric
Both, I have at least 20 pair. My favorite driving gloves are a royal blue leather pair. Skiing, mittens are a must. I end up taking either off to do anything with my hands. I like the idea of a pair in every jacket pocket.
Ever mix one mitten and one glove?
I did wear 2 different gloves to work for a week because one day I was running late and couldn't find a matching pair from the box in the closet.
I always wear gloves
gloves for driving
mittins for walks
Neither. I like my hands to be available for delicate tasks.
I do need to find some foot warming socks as I have metal pins in my feet that get cold and seem impossible to stay warm this time of the year.
Last year my wife gave me a pair of gloves with little hidden nipples that you use to blow your warm breath into the gloves when your fingers get too cold. They are quite handy for shovelling snow.

Try socks made from Moreno wool or a combination of wool and silk

jada, Here's something for your feet, these are very comfortable and last for years, and yes they are 74% merino wool. Ric
I had to stop before saying, I've been wearing the same socks for years! That sound smelly. LOL

Thanks ge. Those are very pretty.I have been wearing two pairs of regular socks lately, so maybe I can go back to one pair with those.
LOL Holly!
don i think victor needs a link for those gloves.
loved the pink mittens victor - my middle daughter banded me from going to her basketball games one year when i was cross stitching, she was mortified when her friends saw me.
i have about 4 levels of gloves depending on how cold it is - as for boots i have a columbia pair that is supposed to offer -25 degree protection - i once got a touch of frost bite on the inside of my big toes when skiing in -27 degree weather and my feet still get cold - the key is to keep the blood flowing
Oh man Bill, I would never ski that cold, I like it 20ish. We went one time when it was very windy and I was a new, so it was a green hill. I swear the wind slowed me down going down the hill.
i was visiting friends up and vermont and we were supposed to go to stowe and they closed it down - we instead went to brandford (?) or something like that, small and family friendly. The morning was cold and not bad once you got warmed up, my problem was i should have changed socks at lunch they were a little wet from sweating.
I mostly wear gloves. When it's really cold I use battery operated socks, when the hands and feet are cold I am done !
Joyce - go for merino wool. You won't regret it. Smartwool is a great brand. Look for the heavyweight ones. They are $$, but Sierra Trading Post often has them for a good price. You can even be notified when they get them in.
i agree - i have several pair from STP and stylish hat's and gloves for my wife as well - pricing is not bad when compared to real store prices.
Isn't any wool itchy when you're allergic to it?
Possibly. Allergy is different than 'regular' itchiness of many wools.
Red Mittens (have to be red) and touque in the time of the cold and the dark. Glovies for spring and fall when I'm mucking about and need fingers. Bare hands for seed collecting always (brrrrrrr in Dec and Jan).
Touque??
