My sansevieria is blooming for about the fourth time in five years. I understand it is quite unusual for these plants to bloom, and I am not quite sure what I am doing to make it happen. Any advice? The blooms come out at night and are very fragrant--almost sickeningly sweet. There are nectar droplets also.
Sansevieria blooms
Congratulations! They can be tough to bloom, although with regular care you many get them annually or semi-anniually.
Very nice! We are having some unusually freezing temp's here in central Fla. and yesterday I got my husband to help me move a bunch of plants to our covered deck to hopefully protect them somewhat from the frost and freeze. I found one Sans. with a bloom spike. I have a few containers of S. traifasciata: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/431/ and have noticed bloom spikes in the past. Not being my favorite plant I have never paid much attention to the blooms. I will have to watch this one and see if I detect any fragrance once the blooms open!
Don't tell me about cold weather! It was 4.7 degrees here in east central Kentucky this morning and we are not forecast to go above freezing all next week. My daughter from upstate NY was in Orlando for the holidays as her husband's high school band was at Disney World and was in the Capital One bowl parade a few days ago. They were enjoying their break from winter.
Thanks for replying. If you have the blooming plants indoors at night, you will smell the flowers three rooms away, as they are very fragrant. I am not very faithful about watering the plants, so am not quite sure what I am doing to encourage or discourage the blooming. Here's another view.
Many people I have talked to didn't know they ever bloom, and I can remember my mother marveling at how hers only bloomed when she was expecting me. That was 69 years ago, so when mine started blooming it put a real scare into me.
LOL regarding that last sentence! ^_^
I'm glad your daughter and her husband were in Orlando when it was a bit warmer! We had one day last week at 80º and today it hasn't gotten out of the 40's ... really strange weather here in Florida right now!! It's even going to be in the upper 30's as far south as Fort Lauderdale! We had a low last night of 34º and the next few nights are predicted to be upper 20's!! We haven't seen weather this cold in ten years and the landscape will definitely look different for awhile until things recover. I have a feeling some things may not survive such extreme cold for such a long period. We have a lot of Tree Philodendrons in the side yard and a huge Schefflera tree in the backyard. They will be mush after a severe frost or freeze but usually re-sprout in spring. I've been in Florida for almost 43 years and don't recall it ever being that cold for more than one or two nights here and there ... never three or more nights in a row! I just hope most of the Tropicals survive.
I have one Sanseiveria that my mom gave me about 20 years ago and another that I bought as a small house plant many years ago ... a couple of others I acquired in trades here on DG. I could plant them in the yard but they are quite invasive down this way.
There goes the price of citrus fruits out the roof!
I got my daughter's pictures of their trip last night. They had a fabulous time both at Disney World and with marching in the Citrus Bowl parade. My son-in-law's students were complaining about 26 hours on the bus until they talked to some band members from Mexico who had spent 52 hours on the road, and that in buses so rickety my daughter said she would not have dared ride across town. Like weather, I guess all things are relative.
Oh my goodness ... 26 and 52 hours on a bus!! I can't imagine being on a bus for 2 or 3 hours!
Glad your family had a nice time at Disney and I know your son in law's students had a grand time marching in the Citrus Bowl parade, making memories that will last a long time!
Linda, I am in awe of this LONG cold snap we are having... very uncharateristic for our corner of the world. Don't you say? Wow!! Its 17 F here right now and I just had to walk my schnauzers... Freezing my buns off...and my buns are acclimated to toasty weather.. At least the wind is not blowing today, that is what cuts me in half. Wind chill is so, well Brrrrrrrrr!
Congrats on the blooms on your sansevieria, Sunfarm. I have never seen one bloom.
