Ok, which one of my DG fiends, I mean friends, sent the snow? We were supposed to have rain by this PM but we have about 2-3 inches of white stuff! It wouldn't be so bad except I got on the bus at 4pm and got home just after 7:30pm; it usually takes about 40 minutes. My bus started going sideways on a slight incline so we were blocking the street. A supervisor had to go get sand so we could get going, it took him over an hour....I think he went to the beach to get it...lol. they were supposed to also send a pull truck but it never showed. The only good thing about being stuck on the bus for that long was I got a lot of uninterrupted knitting done (usually one of the cats has to 'help'). I now have Fran's scarf at least 2/3rds of the way done. Hope you all had a better evening than I did.
Thanks a lot for the snow!
Wasn't me! I promise.. someone sent it to me again tho! :0)
And here I sacrificed and went without--just so you could have the divine fluff.....and you don't appreciate it all.....I feel like a fool.
We tried sending ours west, but of course that never happens here. A couple well known DG'ers up in Canada keep sending the stuff to us. 28" on the ground & it is only December. Our big snow month is March followed closely by January. Ouch!
Some buildings have already collapsed from snow weight. We shoveled the snow off the roof of our shop today. Don't need that falling in!
Bernie
WOW Berni, thats a lot of snow. Bernie are you anywhere near Fosston, Minn? I have a lot friends up in that area. Just wondered. Where did you put all that snow from the roof top. Hope you have a Happy New Year!! Hay.
That's about 250 miles north of me towards Duluth. Duluth had more snow than we did.
Just let it fall of the eves like rain would. Piles are about 5 feet high!
I heard in the PNW Forum from another gal in Portland that there was snow. It's pretty nice in Seattle - we had a sunny day and the temps are 5-10 degrees too high for snow . . . so far. But maybe tomorrow we'll have some of yours. Glad you made it home safely, Loreen.
Katie!!! I always thought Loreen was such a nice lady until we got the snow she sent up here. I hope you got your share, I don't want to be a hog about it. LOL... Loreen you need to come and get your snow, be a good girl now and just keep it in Oregon. Happy New Year's to you Katie, and Loreen. Hay.
You are too funny Haystack! Snow's not too bad when it's expected. ZZ says I need to come visit you and your chickens one of these days. Happy New Year to you too!
Can I blame Loreen for our continuous cold drizzle too?
Sure, why not! LOL!!
Great! I feel better already.
Nope, nope, not sharing. No snow today, either, and I want it to stay that way. The sun is almost shining!!
I'd be happier if someone would sent me about 8 more inches of wet snow.. no more of this dry ski powder stuff. BUT if it comes quick enough.. on top of the.. 4 inches i've got left.. i'll be even happier. I want snowed in for a few more days.
That's what we have....wet, squishy snow....good for making snow people, there is a snow octopus down the street. I made a polar bear a few years ago. It's supposed to be mid-40s today and the rest of the week so no more snow.
Oh goodness, everybody's complaining about my snow deliveries. Grey wanted snow and so I sent it but now she wants a different *TYPE* of snow. Loreen got snow that I sent (in conjunction with dear Catscan, because we work together like that) and now she's complaining when I'm just adding excitement to her life that she can look back upon with glee, and share stories with her coworkers and neighbours.
Now let me be clear, I am completely not responsible for cold drizzle. That is not my style.
Everybody needs to be more appreciative of their snow. I, as a Canadian, am expert in these matters and I only send it where it is needed and wanted. Geesh...
ok.. well i got DRIZZLE today.. it melted my snow. :(
Not my fault. You'll have to blame somebody else for that. Harrumph.
Our snow is gone, we are expecting about an inch of rain tomorrow. I admit, I sent the drizzle....I prefer rain over worthless drizzle....lol.
You guys made the news tonight. Guess there was a baby born on the way to the hospital and hundreds of cars abandoned. I was just in Corvallis and it was cold and clear. Then drove back up to Seattle and it's been warm and clear. What next?
We had only one snow problem today. Everyone thought they could drive very fast in it. Some ended up driving in the ditches. They didn't get far as the ditches have 3 or 4 feet of snow in them.
Even a semi tractor-trailer was parked in the center medium. I wonder what the owner of the company he drives for thought of that. He was going to fast around a curve & started spinning the way it looked. Big $ to get it out also.
Our chickens are so content in their nice warm barns we built for them this fall. Haven't lost any of the 100 new babies. They were hatched October 27. They are getting big fast.
Bernie
100 new babies!! Awesome.
They will be our laying flock next summer for selling eggs at the Farmers Market.
We did this last year, too. Bought 125, October 1. They started laying early March. We got about 95% eggs all summer. We had a few old hens around too. Sold over 2000 dozen eggs at the market. Offered the hens for sale mid October. Sold 104 for $4 each. All went to people who were going to use them as layers. We kept 10 for our winter eggs. They are giving us 7 to 10 eggs a day.
Profit wise we did real well on the hens & eggs. We thought we had a few to many, so that is why only 100 this time.
Bernie
Wow! That is a great business plan!
That is fantastic, Bernie. I'm trying to get a friend of mine, rachierabbit, to post pictures of the chicken coop her dad made her this summer. Stay tuned . . .
We have a big old double corn crib. We just sheeted it with plywood & insulated the walls & ceiling. 2 heat bulbs kept the chicks nice & warm.
Pictures later today, stay tuned!
Would LOVE to see that...
The other part of the driveway, we use to house our tractor & the chicken feed. My son made this little "cat house" for the kitties to sleep in. They love it. About 12 or 15 around here most of the time. Barn cats like to come & go. One tom we call snagglepuss, was gone from early June until October. Other cats show up now & then. I think there are 3 tom cats here that are not ours.
My grandson says the one sitting in front is "Nipper". The one inside is "Leo".
Nice setup - and nifty place for the cats. Any chance you could get someone to come and spay some of those cats or trap and get them to a spay/neuter clinic?
We had a Norwegian Elkhound in Fairbanks when I was growing up. His coat was so thick that he wouldn't spend more than 15 minutes inside in the winter (as I recall, we brought him in at night). Anyway, we put hay in his dog house and then he would dig a nice hole for himself to stay warm. We put 1/2 a ping pong table over the house to make a porch and he loved to hang out on top.
We don't have feral cats here so there would be no point in it. Most of the time everybody is short of cats. These are farm cats & do not get shots of any kind. They do their hunting thing & keep the farms free of mice, rats & squirrels. The roaming tom's are called strays, because they do belong to somebody. They keep the cats from becoming inbred.
I know it's complicated. Being run over by cars & machinery. Distemper disease all keep the population under control.
Bernie
Bernie - Its nice to see someone else that understands that subject. :)
Just hard on baby girls whose mom's cant get enough food. I rescued a colony in the city a few years ago and those girls were only 8 months old and starving. I'm not against colonies of cats, I just hate to see the suffering . . .
Like I said, no feral cats around here. They can't survive the winter unless they have a barn or some kind of shelter.
Also lots of coyotes around to take care of any cats that are out & about.
