What a pretty phal, lin. You grow them outside year round, or do you take them in for a cold snap?

(Zone 1)

Thanks! I love the bloom on this Phal. My Orchids are inside right now. We had a couple of unusually cold nights this month and it got down to 38º twice so I brought my Orchids inside for the time being. It was 80º here yesterday and I was tempted to move them back out, but caught a news report showing our temp's will be dropping back into the low 40's tomorrow night and Monday night, then Tuesday night might be down to the upper 30's again. This weather is really strange ... we usually don't get cold nights until late January. I'm not taking any chances so my Orchids and a few Hoyas are indoors for the time being. I have a few blooming right now. This is another one that's currently in bloom ... Laelia purpurata x Bl. Richard Mueller

That is very pretty. I have never tried laelia or cattleyas. I used to look at them in the books and then get phal's which are easier to grow :).

Did everyone have a nice holiday? We didn't do a big dinner, it was just enough to be special, but not overdone. Life is good. I could do the cleanup in one go, lol.

Jasper, AR(Zone 7a)

Our "white " Christmas kept me home-- so I stayed in and kept the fire going, read in my PJs all day, drank hot cocoa with just a smidge of irish cream and ate anything and everything that didn't fight back or eat me first^_^ thats what happens when you cook desserts to take away and don't take them!!

(Zone 1)

LOL. We don't have snow here and it was 80º yesterday but it was a quiet holiday around here. I got sick right after Thanksgiving and am still fighting it, trying to get rid of this cough that seems to be hanging on. We were invited to our friends home for Christmas dinner but I didn't feel up to going out. My hubby went over though and she sent home a plate of food for me and extra's for both of us for later, as well as half a cherry pie. I am not a cherry pie fan but family and friends know that it's my husbands favorite ... so he was a happy camper! Since I was away for Thanksgiving I bought a turkey and will cook it sometime next week so we can have leftovers, LOL.

Today was only in the upper 50's here and it felt like 40! We are supposed to be in the mid 40's the next two nights and then @ 38º a couple of nights! Very strange weather for this time of year as we don't usually get this cold at night until late January. I can't complain though ... I really feel bad for you folks who have so much snow! I've heard that many folks are snowed in and power is out in a lot of areas ... gee, what do I have to complain about? I guess I could complain that we still have to mow the lawn but that really seems a bit trivial. We still have stuff blooming in our yard.

Thank you for sharing your wonderful pics. Is that a cestrum or something else? It is so pretty. I'm trying to figure out if it would work for a container plant, lol.

3jsmom: That last photo of mine is Pentas. They are butterfly magnets! http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/135092/

Hey ALL!

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas. My company is gone now and we are soooo miserable. But the food was good :) LOL!!!! I think we need a vacation now. I sure missed you all and I am going to read the posts. I see pretty plants, Lin. Love the tropical feel and I am ready for spring!

(Zone 1)

I have lots of red ones still in bloom and two little dwarf pink. It's supposed to be down to 34º here tonight ... Brrr, the Pentas may be goners by tomorrow!

Have a great evening, we're off to a Basketball game!

Another pretty pic, Lin. Have a nice time at the game!!!

Northeast, MO(Zone 5b)

WOW!!! Lin, when you get back from the game and have nothing to do...tell me how to grow those darn things. I bought one on clearance and I know nothing about it. It just says to put in 3 ice cubes and for some reason it looks like the roots (looks more like spider legs to me HA) are sticking up out of the pot. Of course they don't have and orchid stuff around here this time of year or anytime now that I think about it.

(Zone 1)

LOL, I'm back from the game but I can't give any advice on Orchid growing! I usually just hang them in the Schefflera tree in the backyard and let them do their thing from spring to fall. They get watered from the sprinklers twice a week during summer. Some of the plants themselves are pretty pitiful looking but they are blooming so I can't complain too much. I am so bad about repotting when necessary, but I did get better about feeding this year, so maybe that's why they decided to bloom. ^_^ I have a few in bloom right now and one of my New Year's resolutions is to repot all of them!

I took this photo a few days ago out by the pool, this one is Oncidium Nanboh Waltz and has a slight sweet fragrance.

That is going to be so pretty, Mrs. Bonnie!

(Zone 1)

Bonnie, that mini looks so healthy and happy, but you are a great grower so I don't think you'd ever have a sad looking plant! I have such a short attention span and I sure wish I had more patience! My plants (orchids as well as everything else)will look okay for awhile and then I ignore them and don't take proper care so they end up looking ratty. Looks like you are going to have some really nice blooms and I know they are going to be gorgeous from the looks of that color! Do you know the type/name of your orchid? I hope you will post a picture when those blooms open.

I'm a novice with orchids and just recently had a couple identified for me. I've been googling and reading about different ones and if I had a greenhouse I bet I'd be a very avid Orchid enthusiast! I've been reading that a lot of folks who don't have greenhouses grow orchids under lights!
