Where did this strange Kohlrabi come from?

This was in a row of Vienna White kohlrabi. It grew taller faster but took longer to bulb up. It was much larger than the Vienna White once it made a bulb. The leaves were thicker and the stems heavier also.

Cala I know you stay busy but it would have been nice to get seeds from that and make a new one. That's wild. It would sure make an interesting display at market and blow the competition away.

"They make" purple kohlrabi? One stray seed?

The genes are there and you just keep growing out generations and selecting for that coloring or the closest to it. Eventually it might stabilize so every seed produces that coloring. Might work or not. That's how they keep coming up with new varieties. I don't have space to fool with such things and Cala probably doesn't have time. It would be fun though.

This one was so different from the "regular" purple kohlrabi. I would love to have it set seeds but I've never had luck with the kohlrabi. Someone told me that for here you dig a nice bulb, put it in the fridge for the summer and plant it in the fall so it will make seeds. I think they're biennial.

Bud promised to till an area for me to grow things to save seed. We haven't had time yet.

This is what happens when you don't harvest your pak choi in time. I'm hoping they will make seeds for saving. Mercifully I have new plant to eat now and gift these to the worms.

Hey, pretty flowers!

I've had pak choi do that too and the bok choi as well. The unopened flower buds (and the stalk) on the bok choi are delicious with a buttery flavor.

That's interesting! All related to broccoli.
