Question about mixing seed in feeders.

Columbus, GA(Zone 8a)

I bought bags of: (1) sunflower seed chips, (2) Black Oil Sunflower seeds. (3) Wild Bird seed, (4) Finch Seed and (5) Deck and Garden. I poured them all into a big container and mixed 'em up. I call it Hack's blend. Then, I filled ALL my feeders with Hack's blend.

Well, now I'm wondering if I should have kept the seeds separate and had feeders dedicated to a particular kind of seed.

Did I mess up putting Hack's blend in ALL my feeders? Should I have put sunflower seed chips in one feeder, Black Oil Sunflower seeds in another, Wild Bird seed in another, etc.?

What do you all think?

Well see how it works out Hack. I usually keep finch seed and nyjer separate from others in different feeders so the little guys have a better chance to eat as opposed to fighting the larger birds for food. They will eat sunflower when the larger birds aren't hogging those feeders.
The other ones are fine mixed but keep us posted.

I keep mine separate for all the different birds as some birds do not seem to like to dine with the big birds.

I went back to Walmart today and picked up bags of Sunflower seed chips, Black Oil Sunflower seed, Deck and Garden, and Wild Bird Seed.

I'm gonna put each in a separate feeder. I do believe I had more bird activity when I had them separated, originally.

I'll still use Hack's blend in a few and in my platform feeder and I also like ot pour some of it along my driveway.

I've been mixing BOS & peanuts in my no-no mesh feeder, and I mix BOS & either finch blend or straight millet in my cedar hopper style feeder... both do a brisk "business." I do agree about using straight niger or finch blend in feeders meant for smaller birds, but I'm sure Hack's blend will work well in many places as you mentioned. :-)

Soundls like you have a very enthusiastic bird feeding plan!

I keep our seeds separated too, since some birds have particular preferences and will throw the unwanted seed on the ground and/or prefer to eat with their own kind. (i.e., I notice birds are shy to come around the blue jays and red-bellied woodpeckers).

I like safflower for the cardinals.

And I put out whole peanuts for the titmice and some other nut eaters.

Although we haven't had so many birds this winter. We just did the Audubon Christmas Bird Count on Sunday and had very low numbers compared to our last 5 years doing it.

There have been a lot of people reporting few birds at the feeders. There has been an abundance of natural food around.
