Jacayna mystery

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

In May 2008, I purchased Jacayna from a very reputable seller. Jacayna grew, but didn't bloom. Late this past April I thought I had lost her to grasshoppers. All that was left of her was a small stump. So in May I bought another one from the same seller. I started spraying my Brugs with a pesticide that reduced the damage for almost 6 weeks at a time. By late June I began to see a decline in grasshopper numbers and some of my Brugs began to regrow. The older Jacayna sent out two new shoots.

The newer Jacayna started blooming 10/29 and has continuted to bloom on and off since then producing 2 to 5 blooms with each flush. All but one of the blooms have had 6 points and all have been white with prominent green ribs. This is the new Jacayna. She is ~ 3-1/2' tall and has 4 branches.

The older Jacayna has one bloom. The bloom is about 50% larger and is starting to show some pink color around the bottom part of her skirt. The plant has 2 branches. Both plants are fertilized at the same time — a dilute solution of MG with some epsom salt added — every time I water. She also about 3-1/2' tall. Both Jacaynas are in the greenhouse now and are located about 3 feet from each other. I'll have to keep an eye on these two girls. What's going on?

Dana, I've always read that using any oil in summer is a no no. Remember these are Texas grasshoppers. They are used to the heat. LOL.

Jo, I'll get the name of the spray tomorrow. I'm storing it in the greenhouse so I don't lose track of it. I wish I had a garden shed or at small part of the barn for my garden equipment. Things get moved around the barn.

Jo and Doris, I'm sure both plants are Jacayna. Jacayna is the only Brug cultivar I know of that has a stable 6 point flower form. The shape in both is identical. The white form has a smaller flower, but that could be due to the age of the plant. I also need to observe more flushes. That's why I'm reluctant to name the seller, but I will D-mail you the name. I'm not claiming I received the wrong Brug. I just want to know what would cause this color change. There is no hint of color on the white form. It would be neat if the white one were a sport of Jacayna.

I have always been amazed at how brug blooms can be so different from season to season. I am sure that is what is going on with this one. During the spring and summer Pink Velvet will look cherry red, but during the fall they are a light pink. Even Little Moon will have a little tint of color during the fall. Oh and I love Cypress Gardens in the fall, it will have a slight peach color.

I understand these changes can occur. I have doubles of a small number of Brugs for one reason or another, but if the blooms pale in the fall or winter, all plants of the same cultivar pale out in a very similar manner. I've even has a few who darken in the winter, but again along the same line.

As you can see in these 2 photos, one is white and the other although paler than its summer color still has color, which by the way, got a bit darker by the 3rd day. It's a puzzle, but time will tell. I'm hoping the one stays white. I love white Brugs.
