I purchased seed to grow but growing instructions I've googled/binged is minimal at best. Long season, warth and sheltered area is the best I found. Depth,light/dark?, bottom warmth?...nada-zip-zilch!
Cumin from seed?
I found one reference (veddy veddy scienteefic) that says soaking for 3 days prior to planting helps a lot. (http://cat.inist.fr/?aModele=afficheN&cpsidt=14103172)
The banana-tree.com says "Germination for: CUMIN - Cuminum cyminum Best sown in spring. Barely cover the seeds with well draining soil. Plant in bright light. Keep lightly moist. "
Another reference from a science site that is out of commission says "A temperature range between 15 to. 25°C found to be the optimum temperature for cumin seed germination ..." (which is close to 60-75 degrees).
HTH!
Thanks cat
Sure thing, good luck!
I think I'll set up my grow light and heat mat on the kitchen table in Feb. to start my herbs, peppers and tomatoes.
I need a bigger kitchen so I can do that. I have a basement half-way set up, but I never go down there and things get forgotten, grr...
I try not to use my kitchen for purpose it was intended...*G*
I root plants on my stove... the pilot lights provide the bottom heat and the vent hood has halogen bulbs that provide both heat and light. Works great!!! 8 )
Southern Herb Growing says cumin seed is easy to grow from seed but has one problem. Viability. Apparently the seeds loose the ability to sprout quite quickly. They also suggest growing them tightly together will help keep the flowers and seed off the ground. Let us know how they do...
pod.
my kinda gal. Use that stove for every purpose but cooking....LOL
You bet!!! The oven pilot light works well for drying herbs too. Merry Chrimses...
