carpet smells after dog was sick

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

I have a 12 old Aussie - she has been sick at her stomach now and then throughout her life. I know her breeder very well, and knew her parents from pups till they died at 11 and 13 years. Her dad, Harley, had the same sort of upset stomach during his life. She has seen the vet recently, and basically, she is old, her body is not working as well as it used to. We keep her diet steady - half Wellness Core, half Natural Balance canned. We tried a couple of the hospital type diets with her, but she didn't thrive on them.. so back to the Core/NB mix. I am keeping an eye on her for signs of change that would indicate cancer or other serious issues other than old age. I have to face the fact that she probably won't be here for her birthday next December.

Anyway....

I would like to know of something I might have on hand, or buy fairly inexpensively, that might work to take the smell out of my livingroom carpet from Pebbles being sick. As of last week, I am unemployed, so cost is a factor. I can't call up Stanley Steamer for $200 right now.

Having this carpet for 25 years, many cats and dogs have made messes on it - and I have never run into this problem with odor.

Pebbles was sick in there the night before last, and she "hit" several areas. I am sure one problem is that we did not find it right away - maybe half an hour went by. I got up as much of it as I could, blotted it well, then hit the carpet with Nature's Miracle and some carpet cleaner. I only had half a bottle - maybe 10 oz. of NM on hand... but that is more than I have ever had to use at one time before. The next morning when I could see better in the room, I got out the trusty SteamVac carpet cleaner and went over it first with carpet cleaner, then Oxyclean, then rinsed a couple times with plain water.

I just went in there this morning, and it still has some odor.

When I was at the grocery yesterday, I saw, in the pet area, a sprinkle on product by Arm and Hammer for deodorizing. I didn't buy it because I was not sure if it would work... I have not used a product like that before. I am wondering if I could use plain baking soda, sprinkle it on, then let it set and vacuum up.

Any other ideas on something I could do?

My carpeting is old, but was good quality commercial short berber. It has held up amazingly well after all the pet "issues" and toenails all these years.

Here is a picture of Pebbles, doing one of her favorite things. She loves to lean on there looking out the window. This was taken in the room where I am having an issue. You can see the carpet. Unfortunately, you can also see my garden shoes....

Thanks for any ideas you might have on getting rid of this sour smell.
