What follows are four photos taken of a car with A (Alabama) flags on it windows. To give you an idea of distance, there were 4 parking spaces between me and the Alabama car. Skies were blue, sunshine on the flag. There was a brisk wind and the flags were flapping vigorously. All four snaps froze the flapping well.
This photo with my Canon 70-300 IS USM lens by itself. The lens was on 300 mm.

Played around with Tamron 1.4x and 2x conveters
This pic is with the Tamron 1.4x Teleconverter between the lens and the Canon 40D. The 70-300 lens was zoomed to 300 mm. Autofocus worked every time I triggered it. I didn't reduce the f/stop by one, as some recommend. The camera was on P mode for all the shots.
The 1.4x behind the 300mm produces 420mm (1.4 x 300).

This pic is with the Tamron 2x Teleconverter between the lens and the Canon 40D. The 70-300 lens was zoomed to 300 mm. Autofocus worked 50% of the time. On this shot it worked. I didn't reduce the f/stop by two, as some recommend. The camera was on P mode for all the shots.
The 2x behind the 300mm produces 600mm (2 x 300),
Last thing I did was attach the 1.4x converter to the 2x converter and then placed the stack between the camera and the lens. That gave me a whopping 840mm (300 x 1.4 x 2). It would not autofocus, so I used manual focus and was happy with the image that resulted. I did nothing to the camera's settings, kept it in the P mode.
This flag was on the far side of the car. The previous three were on the near side. Didn't realize I did that. The reflection of the flag in the last photo is when I realized this last pic was of the other flag (a little farther away).

I would like to have used a bird, but couldn't find one that would stay put long enough for me to set up the various combinations of lens and teleconverters. Just as I finished a girl got in and drove off.

I hope she didn't think I was a stalker. :)
BTW, I did yell "Roll Tide" to her - she smiled.

Nice comparison's Hack.
Thanks, pelle.
I read on Mrs_Ed's camera thread that you use a Sigma 50-500 lens with your 40D. I've been looking at several on ebay to use with my 40D. What is your opinion of the lens?
Thanks
