Yesterday was a really nice day. The sun was shining and it warmed up to 60ish. Just a gentle breeze blowing. I spent a lot of time with the animals on the hill. Got everybody fed. Cleaned out water tubs and filled them back up. Reconfigured my chicken nests and was rewarded with an extra egg for the day. Put fresh hay in the nests and put down about a half bale of molded hay to keep them out the mud. Got a lot done in the house so all in all it was a very good day. Today has started off well also. PTL. Hope you all have a good day as well.
Nice weather Yesterday
Sounds great: Like the book of Ruth, God's blessings or handful's on purpose. I also had a great day and likewise PTL. Howie
Hi Green: Thats what our place looks like, We have been in single digits now for ten days but today its up to 33 and Feels warm in comparison. We only have about three inches but the ground is extremely hard due to the long term freeze. Hay.
Hi y'all I would gladly send y'all some of this heat (80+) for some of y'all's cool.
It was heavenly, wasn't it Cajun? Cold today...
It was cold today. Not as bad as it had been a few days ago but not nice like yesterday. It was overcast but no rain or snow. They had said we might get showers. Glad we didn't. We still got mud. It got colder as the day went on. It was warmer at 7am than at noon. I was disappointed. But I still had a good day even though I didn't get a single egg. What's up with that?
well I went from three doz to two doz in just a couple days, so who knows whats ahead in the egg game. But at least I'm having no trouble with the water freezing this year. Don't know what took me so long to build my electric water warmers. Duh. Hay
Hi wren! I'll take some of that heat!! Heading into the teens for the next few days-brrrr! Bucket heaters are on.
We are going to get the single digits starting tonight, high winds, and its even worse for me as I live on top of a hill, seems like the wind never stops blowinig 25below zero with the wind chill figured in the next few days.Have to collect eggs every hour.
I get some of y'all's cool, down to 59 this morning buy the weekend they way it will drop down to 33 at night. Strange weather.
Dang it! It went the wrong way wren!!
green, Know what you mean, when it dips down that low eggs tend to freeze! We aren't as cold as you(31 w/ a wind chill of 23 tonight it's supposed to be 17)
We've got all our water heaters plugged in for everyone which makes it a bit easier doing the chores.
Heat lamp goes 24/7 in silkie coop and have a heated dog bowl for water for them.Big coop had heated waterer and no heat. Its 8 degrees right now with the wind blowing and 29 in the big coop and 40 in the silkie coop. But the sun just went down so it will be getting colder.I have themomaters in each coop that I can read from inside which is nice.
The sun has been shining here today but it's still cold. I got 2 eggs today.
Enough for breakfast!! Yum!
Got 2 again today but I look for a hold the next few days. They are calling for 10" snow here. It's raining now so when the temps drop we'll have ice under the snow. Such a joy to think about dealing with that as I climb the hillside to feed my livestock. Please pray I don't break a bone.
Be careful CajuninKy. Icy conditions under the snow make treacherous conditions.
The weathermen in my area are predicting 8-12 inches w/ blizzard conditions Saturday night into early Sunday morn. I wish sometimes that I could pick this state up and move it down south!lol!
Woke up to 18 inches and still snowing...{sigh!}
We got 11 inches but no ice. We have been without power for 6 days. Just got it back tonight. Trying to catch up. Still getting 2 and 3 eggs a day each day even through the storm. Gotta love my girls!
we have a blizzard warning! possible 11 inches coming here tonight. :) already got ice.. :( hate ice.. my chicken coop is frozen shut. I'll have to pry them out in the morning.
your nearly straight east of me Cajuninky... are you getting the snow we are getting too?
No snow here. We are getting rain now.
we ended up with 8 to 9 inches of snow about 4 am.. more coming this afternoon ( i'll believe it when i see it) our work phones are ringing off the hook!
Hope that snow passes you by. I hate the stuff. And ice is the worse! We were very blessed we didn't have any ice under the snow.
o my no.. i want more snow. We need the business & I want to go sledding. :) this is too powdery to sled on. need more wet snow.
What kinda business?
We own Wreckers. Semi Truck wreckers.. very large wreckers. :)
Ah, no wonder you want snow!
well.. that too.. but i am just a big kid.. i still love to go sledding, I love the white snow blanketing the land, its so bright & pretty with it. The sun shines brighter, the trees look happier. TO me it makes Winter so much more alive & less dreary.
I agree, if it's going to be THAT cold, it is much better to have snow. I don't own a sled anymore, nor do we have a suitable hill, but we used to sled for hours when I lived in Massachusetts. At night was best!
I haven't went sledding at night since i was a kid.. adults are less adventurous when it comes to getting cold & damp from snow.
The weatherman just landed on my Christmas list for next year. 20 inches of snow possible before March... 5 more chances of huge snow storms in the next 40 days. :) according to my grandpa's way of measuring.. (old wives tale) we actually are due for 24 inches of snow minimum. So the weatherman isn't far off.
Okay, Greykyttyn...spill the beans. What's the old wives tale and how did your Grandpa come to that conclusion?
ok.. it snowed here on the 24th. (the day of the month is important!) According to Grandpa it would either snow 24 inches or 24 times minimum during the winter. As long as it covers the ground it counts. which is usually about 2 inches give that ground isn't level here. He kept extensive records during my childhood & I've seen where he was correct nearly every winter. Mom says he kept record of it when she was a kid too. He could look back at his "weather" books & tell you what it was going to do weather wise. So on the 2nd day of the month.. it would be 2 times or 2 inches.. the 6th.. 6 times or 6 inches.. My senior year it snowed on Nov 30. The following April (which was still winter here that year) we received 26 inches of snow in one storm & 5 inches a week later. :) best snow we've had in a long long time.
Interesting. We haven't had any snow here yet (knocking loudly on wood). This is based on the first snow fall of the season?
yes.. the first one that covers the ground or is measurable.. how ever you want to say it. but generally u want all the ground covered.
I started a thread on Weather Prediction Folklore earlier today. Would you share this info on the other thread?

i forgot.. it also can mean how many days of snow you get.. like 24 days total it snowed over the season. It sounds like kinda a broad idea with lots of things it can be. But i've seen it do everything but the part about being tht number of days with snow.
It will be a balmy 48 degrees sunny here today. Good thing since it is time to clean All the waters for chickens, ducks and horses. BIlly will be riding today he is on his own this coming gymkana and so He needs to practice...
