Is farm eggs yolk suppose to be darker than store bought? My neighbor gave me a few and their yolks were very dark in color nothing like my store bought.
Yolk color?????
Yes they should be, especially if the hens are free range--a dark, even almost red yolk, indicates that the birds have had access to fresh greens, kelp or other sources of Omega 3 fatty-acids and chlorophyll...in other words, all things being equal, a darker yolk tends to indicate better nutritional value.
Modern factory raised layers produce pale yolks unless they are fed supplements....in which case they will charge you more for them.
That is a bit of an over-simplification--but darker egg yolks are really a good sign.
Yep, the darker the better. Pale yolks are lacking nutrition and flavor.
Thank you for the info. now I can feel safe in eating these eggs. I hope to have my own in the spring and this will be a big help.
The first time I made scrambled eggs with 'happy chicken' eggs, my hubby asked me if I had added food coloring to make them so yellow....lol!
Now I look at store-bought eggs and think "eew, I'm not eating those sickly pale things!"
They had a look of red so I thought blood. I'm glad I was wrong because my neighbor brought me another bowl full. I'm so lucky.
You are lucky, those are some good eggs with dark yolks.
