nesting boxes

Langley, WA(Zone 7b)

Has anyone ever heard of a nesting box called 'bobbin' something?

Is it better to have a "no" response rather than just 4 views and nothing said?? Sorry...wish I could help...

I've never heard of it either. What is it supposed to be like?

We are using a partitioned box from a school cloakroom; it was built for kids to put their lunchboxes and other paraphernalia in but it's perfect for our chickens. It has eight sections. I have seen lots of examples of easy-to-make nestboxes, though, if you or your DH are at all handy with a saw and hammer!

We use sturdy plastic milk crates. Works great.

I googled my heart out and the only thing I found was an art studio on the CA coast. I wonder if it designed like the plastic boxes you put sewing machine bobbins in....sort of tiered with cut outs?

Okay, I finally found them! I had the name wrong. Google bobbinfull. They are basically metal boxes. Someone had mentioned them to me and I just wondered what they looked like.

My Mom had some of those at one time. Her hens were all trying to lay in one nest and they were breaking the eggs. She built a long trough and put a thick piece of foam rubber in the bottom. She upholstered it with drapery fabric. When the hens lay their egg in it and stand up, the egg rolls over next to the side because the upholstering caused the bottom to be slightly higher in the middle than on the sides. That keeps them from stepping on the eggs. Also there are no dividers in it so there is no fighting over one spot.

I use plastic milk crates too.

My dh built nice nesting boxes and was so proud of his work and they all lay in one long box he made. Not one lays in the nice nesting boxes.

Many years ago I bought a wooden crate with slats around the sides at a craft store. I can't remember now what I bought it for. It's longer than the square milk crates. I put some hay in there and stuck it in the coop and my one big fat white hen lays her eggs in there. I think it's because she has more room to sit comfortably in it. We also put golf balls in the crates when we first put them in there so they got the idea of where to lay their eggs. :)

I use the golf balls too.
