CLOSED: Looking for Sapium sebiferum (Chinese Tallow, Popcorn Tree)
Here in NW Florida, this tree is a weed. If it's the tree that grows in my yard - it has pearl-sized white fruits and very weak limbs - it self-sows all over the yard and I yank them out all the time. I hope I've id'd my tree incorrectly and it isn't the one you want, because I think you will regret planting the tree I have in my yard. It surely looks like the one I have .
It is sad but they are now weeds all across this nation. They are taking over forest because they seed by the thousands and grow so fast. The wood is much softer than pine. Yes it is a forest weed.
I have lots of seeds and even seedlings, but I would NEVER send them to anyone! It is a horrible pest.
They are a weedy invasive pest here as well. Once in a yard they are a nightmare to rid yourself of. I hope you know what your really wanting to bring home.
I remember these trees from the Haunted House at Disneyland Neat crooked limbs and rough bark. If they are properly taken care of they have lots of character and do grow very fast! Sadly like others have said they are a pest and put out thousands and thousands of seeds that germinate very fast and really there is no way to control them unless you have a crew to remove the berrys before they fall. Also they put of an ungodly amount of pollen! My son has to stay inside when its thick.
If you are looking for a fast growing tree there are many other choices. Please consider looking in to alternatives!
Yes, this is the one I am looking for. Just wanted to try one or two in a huge pot. I have no problem with yanking up the babies and tossing them . Been doing that for years with sweetgum and it is a neverending job LOL! The berries of the tallow are used in dried arrangements in country and prim decor.
Still looking for a few if anyone wants to share, will gladly pay postage!
If they are as invasive as everyone here says, there is a very good chance they are illegal to plant in some areas. And that would make them illegal to mail as well. I would think twice about having *my* name on the package.
Raggedy, you are getting good advice based on lots of experience...it is wise to rely on that...many other trees without the baggage of that one!...a white vitex will do the same thing and the spring pruning is fun to make it look like a large bonsai!...
