Female Whooper killed on eastern migration

Norman, OK

Saw this posted on a birding listserve. One of the Eastern birds was shot and killed on the IN/IL border. The bird was especially important because she was the only eastern bird that had successfully hatched a chick.

This is just heartbreaking....idiots that do stuff like this just make my blood boil. Karma will catch up with who ever did it...of that I am sure. I can only imagine how heartsick the people are that have put so much love into this project.

And what about the vandalism at the center? Almost seems like they were targeted. Makes you wonder about some people.

An adult whooper is a remarkable bird, hard to mistake for anything else. Shooting would seem deliberate. Most people can't keep a secret, maybe the reward will prompt some info to come forward. But the bird is irreplaceable. That is the worst part.

I don't think the vandalism and the shooting are related...people that do stuff like this don't have enough frontal lobe to be organized enough to manage 2 related incidents! JMHO!! Thankfully most people are good and kind hearted. I do hope the idiot is caught and punished appropriately.

Idiots.
Same mentality as this clown in Seattle yesterday:

When they spotted the stump Wednesday, staffers at the Washington Park Arboretum had little doubt what happened: Someone seeking a free Christmas tree had chopped down a likely candidate.

But even the Grinch wouldn't have targeted that particular tree.

The 7-foot conifer was one of the park's rarest specimens, an imperiled species collected from the mountainous Yunnan province in China.

TV interview said worth 10 grand. and it looked like a Charlie Brown tree.
That whooping crane was priceless.
I think the civil war is erupting again in the comment section in your link.

That is awful! Ditto to what has already been said.

Now, I like to hunt and have taken my fair share on deer, squirrels and doves . . .

BUT this just makes me see red. I mean, there is no possible reason to take a Whooping crane - none!

I know they'll probably never catch the imbecile who did this, but if they do, then lock 'em up and throw away the key.

And that rare tree, to me is pretty thin. Who in the world would pick that as a Christmas tree, I prefer them a LOT fuller. This too is terrible, just terrible.

Very unfortunate for these kind of things to happen, but I have faith that the W. Crane Program will still be successful (because it is working) although it may take another hundred years, but there is enough people to keep it going.
I,m sure the tree was a (Dare), guarantee the other will probably be re-located.
