Someone pointed me to the below blog post titled "Is Cheap Bird Seed A Good Deal?" I found it interesting, esp to see someone had done some informal testing and found that really cheap sunflower seed typically provides less seed meat than "non-cheap."
To sum it up:
"So, beware when you see sunflower or any bird seed on sale at an unusually good price. Chances are it’s a sign that the seed is old or of little feeding value to the birds."

Thanks evie that was interesting, especially seeing the seeds opened up. I'm lucky to have 2 excellent wild bird stores near me.
