Hibiscus "Galaxy Star"??????

Ft Lauderdale, FL(Zone 10a)

Took this picture today of a couple of blooms on Hibiscus "Galaxy Star". It's the first time I've seen the very orange bloom on this plant. I'm guessing it's a "sport" of "Galaxy Star"???? Will have to see if I get more blooms like that one.

Nice Jon... Unless you had a change in temps it definitly looks like a sport.. Congrads...

I'm thinkin it's a sport. No change in temps the past 5 days. There are some more buds on that branch, so I marked it. Also cross pollinated that "sport" with another one this AM.

Lucky you my friend, and it looks as gorgeouse as the original one too. Hope you get seeds from it, thanks for posting it for us to see.

Wow, Jon, both are beautiful. Are they on the same branch? Thanks for sending me a cutting. Will let you know as soon as it blooms & we will see what happens with it. Don't care which it looks like as both are beautiful. There is a Hib called Dorothy Brady that has over 20 sports. Wouldn't that be exciting? Just one is exciting. Thanks for sharing with us
& please let us see the next blooms.

Thanks Judy. They're on the same plant, but not the same branch. The branch with the sport is in the middle of the plant.

What is a sport?!? Both blooms are indeed beautiful!

Jon, put one of your tags on the sport bloom & see if you get the same thing there or if it pops up somewhere else. My Morning star has done this & I tied a ribbon where the bloom was different. Now it has buds all over so maybe I can get it to bloom both kinds at the same time. Also took cuttings where the different blooms were & have them rooting to see what comes out of them. Also sent Wilfred a cutting from both parts of the plant since he has such a green thumb. I'm certainly no expert but I think a sport is when a plant reverts back to one of the plants in its ancestry. Please feel free to correct me if that is wrong.

Hi Judy. I cross pollinated another hibiscus with the sport bloom and have it labelled. That way I know which branch got all sporty sport on me. May try to root a cutting after the other buds on the branch bloom. LOL I really don't know what a sport is....other than its a different colored bloom on a plant. Not sure whether it's a reversion back to a parent, or a mutation from the actual plant. Maybe if we say it's a "back to the future" bloom we have everything covered??? I wonder if your "Galaxy Star" will end up doing the same thing Judy?

Don't know, Jon, but am anxious to see what happens. Now, what if we come up with a different "sport"?

That would be awesome. LOL Wouldn't you just love that dilemma??

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Really would like that.

Jon, you should post this pix on plant files. Maybe someone else will come up with something similar.

Good idea Judy. Just did it.

Again... can someone explain "sport" to me?

Ft Lauderdale, FL(Zone 10a)

See above PurePlants. It's when you get a completely different looking bloom, compared to the typical bloom, both on the same plant. It's something genetic, in the plant, that produces the untypical bloom. I believe any future blooms, on that same branch of the plant, will also bloom the same as the first "sport" bloom.

Thanks amore... I guess I was making it out more difficult than it was.... thanks!
