I have a yellow brugmansia that came to me as a 'yellow'. It has four teeth and looks exactly like another I have, Dr. Suess. Does that mean they are the same? And if I could ask another question, how many teeth does Jamacian Yellow have?
tooth question
yes_you_are. i would call that a match, and have done so. i have a young JY, hasn't bloomed yet. welcome to our forum. are you in a warm zone?
No one Special,
What are teeth on a Brug?
NOS, charles grimaldi has three, jamaican yellow is supposed to stay yellow. glory, teeth on calyces, as in versicolor only has one. is a chart i have book marked on my computer, when i get to it i will send to someone who does links.
now I am confused as a baby raccoon. will have to wait for the link hope i don't get bit in the mean time
After comparing closely, the flower on the 'yellow' is much bigger than the Dr. Suess. I have another DS and the flowers are the same size. Do you still think they are the same?
and how many teeth or whatever are on a Jamacian yellow?
I live in zone 7
i don't know, there are other yellows and could be a hybrid. i am computer challenged, don't know how to send a link from this version of netscape, have never made links, and have an appointment

hope this works, someday i will get one of my kids to teach me this stuff.
thanks arlene I still fuzzy on it but I'm fuzzy on lots of things
Arlene,
Thanks.. your link came through.
NOS..to answer your question...Jamican Yellow has three teeth...I just went outside and picked a J. Yellow flower.
Now, I know what Brug teeth are.
Irish...see we can still learn things at our age. LOL
Glory,
I don't know about the whole teeth thing. Reason being, I have several hybrids that have almost versicolor calyx's, but the calyx is much shorter and almost at the same angle as an aurea calyx as far as the teeth ends go. Finally, I have a few such hybrids that sometimes develop anywhere from a slight split to a pronounced split. I notice this with my hybrids that have been crossed to 3 species and then crossed back to another 3 species cross or a 2 species cross. I think I would put more stock in the shape of the seedpod and seed personally...hopefully Rich will come to our aid here. In reality, I pay most atttention to the shape of the flower and seedpod. I do like certain characteristics in leaves as well as stems and such though....
i concluded my jutner orange and dr seuss were different based on the number of calyceal teeth, only thing i could find. brugman, are you saying that the chart is wrong?
Arlene,
I am not saying the chart is wrong-but that more work needs to be done-perhaps pictures of the various crosses and parts of each flower. Each cross between species is so variable in flower form that to simply go by a route this is it approach is a bit extreme in my oppinion. I think of the chart more of a general thing and not as an absolute. Thats my oppinion. I would like to see more people involved in keeping records of calyx teeth numbers, etc on their hybrids myself and even lenght simply because I'm too lazy to note such things unless it jumps up and says look at me-you haven't seen a calyx that looks like me before....Then I wonder, why is this calyx so different from any other I have seen and why isn't the flower as unusual. Seriously, some of them are very different to me at least and in such ways that I would never have noticed them if I had not been gazing at the flower each day.
Y'all lost me a few post back. LOL
Glory, i am not sure either but i do know you seem to have great luck making hybrids. i have seed pods on 4 plants now, i know it's the white hybrid loaded with pollen, never could make a seed pod on purpose til it started blooming. i haven't fotgotten isabella, or did you already get one?
NOS, i have brugs that make different sized flowers sometimes, could it be the same brug and just have more nutrients/water/sun or something? or a younger or older plant?
Arlene,
No I haven't got one yet but no big rush....we have all winter.
Haven't had much luck this season with hybridizing...guess my luck has run out. :0)
WAIT! Gloria, are you looking for Isabella? Please let me be the one to send it to you, you've been so very generous with me.
Arlene,
Yes, Brugmansia flowers are controled by how much water and nutrients they get to a certain extent. Size of the plant seems to play more of a factor than age though in size of the blooms though in my experience.
Glory,
When you look up into a Brugmansia flower on a rare occassion they appear to have collected dust to their sides. This seems to be the best time to pollinate them if you can catch them just as they are getting sticky inside. Hope that helps, but I feel that you will get a few hybrids started this winter since you have a greenhouse. Your luck hasn't ran out Glory, its just started.
Glory, didn't the cutting with the seed pod on it root? i am sure hoping so. you are welcome to share my seeds (if they make it), am hoping to have way too many to start.
Brugman, that's the way it seems to me, same plant sometimes just has different sizes of blooms at different times.
No One Special, i can't imagine what else it would be if it other wise looks just like dr suess.
The seed pod hasn't fallen off but it hasn't grown either..Bruman... what is up with the pod. Remember this is the Junter Orange that I cut the branch of with a small seed pod attached...kept it alive and now it has rooted and in a gallon pot but the pod has done nothing. Tell me what have I done wrong....
Just relax and give it time Glory. Any time you stress a plant its going to grow slower and grow where it needs first. Worst thing you will have is a smaller seedpod with perfectly good seeds.
Burgman,
I promised to hang loose...boy that is hard for me to do but I'll do it. You know it may have grown a tad since the last time I looked at it or is that just my wanting it to grow? LOL
