Violas vs Pansies

Which do you prefer? I planted a few pansies a month ago and got carried away over Thanksgiving weekend with violas when overhearing a clerk at Blue Moon Nursery, who seemed qualified to offer gardening advice, tell someone that violas do better than pansies over the winter and violas reseed. Anyone with experience with these flowers? Did your violas reseed?

Mine do, but the seeds usually end up sprouting in the grass, maybe I mulch too much and don't let them go to seed for long enough (Pull out in May)

Yes, mine reseed year after year. I even collected some seed last year. The volunteer plants are now just 2 or 3 inches tall and they can be transplanted quite easily when they reach about 3to 4 inches tall. This year I bought some bright yellow viola plants and they have been blooming for at least a month.

I'll need to be mindful of the mulch. I like to mulch heavily in the fall and spring. I suppose I could harvest seed and scatter them after the spring application of leaves (should I be so fortunate to have enough from the fall to do so).

These pretty little violas light up a place and the reseeding possibility made the sale. Those purple and white violas are cute as a button!
