Does anyone know of a place to find more unusual aroids? Namely philos and anthuriums. I can't find most of the plants I would love to get. Someplace reasonable would be great. I have some family in central FL, so maybe even a greenhouse that sells them, or a flea market or... I don't know where to find the plants. I am lucky to find Marble Queen pothos around here and syngonium.
Locating unusual aroids
If you'd let me know which kinds you are looking for, I might be able to help.
LariAnn
that's easy LariAnn she's like me, we want everything, I just have more space...LOL
I am trying to find P. gigas, melanochrysum, naugahyde whose real name escapes me, and squamiferum (or a similarly shaped bipennifolium). I would also like a small start of an orange pigtail anthurium and a lance leaf A, which I can't think of any names right now. I don't have tons to spend and would just love small starts, but I love the wonderful velvety and marked leaves. And about squamiferum, well I want to decorate it like a reindeer for Christmas with my chilluns, then if it grows big enough, share it with Trina in the spring. It will be treated respectfully all year, except for the month before Christmas :)
How about a leaf or 2 from a zz plant?
Your in Kentucky the same state as me. I have a large collection of aroids and am just south of Louisville.
I know, I look all over your site. If you have some of the other plants I am after, I'll probably order from you in the spring anyway, let me know or dmail me.
3jsmom,
Do you have this one? Philodendron Wend Imbe
Edited to say... Sorry, I forgot to put the website where I located it..

No, that is neat.
With Tax and shipping it will cost me $18.50-- Now if I can just figure out what size plant that will buy me..
It's a small plant. It says 4 inch pot and they picture it. You can almost get the variegated for what they are asking.
I think it stays small, that's why they like it for terrariums, but is less showy than some of the others.
I did read closer and discovered a 4 in pot..stinks -- Where can I get the variegated?
I have just seen it now and again on Ebay. You are mostly going to get small plants if you have to use mail order, but otherwise the cost would be so much more to get a large plant, both in shipping and the growers time. I'd rather have it small so I can enjoy watching it grow :). If you can find what you want where you live, you'll get more plant for the money, but that isn't always possible, I guess.
We have a local retail nursery here called LauraKays.. I've kinda made friends with the owner... He told me if I ever quit my job to come by and he will pay me to help him out around there...
I'm going to see if they have it or if he will order one for me.. I'll let you know..
and if I get one.. You know the drill.. Share, Share, Share!!

Lol, I think you would love working at a greenhouse, but it is pretty warm in the summer :)
Yay! I found a zz plant today in 6" pot. I was cruising the plant aisle, walking fast but looking out of the corner of my eye. All of a sudden I screeched to a halt, backed up the !/2 step that I passed it by and my heart leaped. I am now the proud mommy of a zz plant :).
I have looked at several zz plants recently.. Our Lowes has had several pretty good sized ones (10 in pots) for $19.99.. I just have nowhere else to put them in the house until I get some of my patio plants back outside in spring..
I never noticed them in the stores until today. I was promising myself to be good, but I thought it was pretty reasonable at $5, and was definitely already on my wish list, I had to get it. My husband rolled his eyes, and I just got it anyway, lol.
$5 sounds like a good deal.... I'm very familiar with the eye rollin from hubby. lol
Lol. Anyway, I think I will actually dare to move a plant away from the windows. I guess zz can take really low light levels, but my room has southeastern exposure with the winter angle bringing it far into the room. Hopefully the plant will be happy.
Here's to eye-rolling husbands that love us even though they don't get it :).
Keep us posted on how it fares..
Wal-mart has them and I got a nice Hoya"linearis"
Check out some Lowes Has some nice plants too.
Walmart and Lowes are the only local places that carry houseplants. The local greenhouses that I know of only carry bedding plants and perennials. I found a couple sellers online that I really like, but you usually get a bigger plant for the same money from a local seller. Oh well. I have been repotting quite a bit, even though it's off season. I was looking at the zz plant and debating on dividing it. I'm curious about what the plant looks like under the soil, lol.
Ah ha ha ha ha, the zz plant looks like potatoes in the soil, lol. Now I have 2, one on each end of a cabinet. I have a question, can they root from stem cuttings or only leaf? Also, if you broke the plant away from it's tater, what would happen, would you have more or less plants? I may try these things later but wondered if anyone else had checked them out. Also, do the roots produce plants? Neat plant, though, both above and below ground.
I think I've got what you call ZZ plants, the stems are zig-zag shape. I've a variegated one and a plain green. They grow into large clumps, but they're in out of the way places and I haven't ever done anything with them. Have never dug any out. Maybe I should.
I cracked mine open for 2 reasons. First, I was so curious, and second, it was stretching the pot the same way a ginger will do, lol. I divided it and put it into 2 pots the same size. If I ever see the variegated, I'll probably have to get that one, too. I have a jungle in my house, tropic. Well, at least there aren't many mosquitoes, so life is good :).
ZZ looks like this. These 2 are small now, but they'll grow :).

That isn't the one I was thinking about, but I do have it as well. A small one in the garden.
