Will Passiflora grow in my zone? We have short winters and when we do get to the freezing point, it doesn't usually stay there for long. Its very humid here... Even when the temp reached 28 F last night, the relative humidity was showing at 81%. It does get pretty hot in the summer, some days it reaches temps upward of 100 F.
Seems like I read somewhere that some passiflora are native to the southeastern US. I can't find the article anywhere.
I would like to grow some to place on my covered patios in the spring. Do they climb?
Passiflora Questions
oh yeah they climb, they send little runners that cling to things and twist and curl to pull itself tight when it latches on to something...incanata is hardy to my zone so that should grow for you....look Passies up in plant files I think most probably could grow in your zone if you mulched good, just remember that most passies only flower on new growth and would have to be cut back every spring, but they grow fast
Sounds good. Thanks Trina
your welcome anytime!
daisylovn,
the P. incarnata is native to Alabama. I saw many as a child in Daviston, Al at my grandfathers home. They are cold hardy and will come back year after year on the same roots. Some say they are invasive but I don't think they are in Alabama, they certainly are not here in Oklahoma. They have something about clay, they really love it. They will grow into the side of a clay pot, I read but haven't yet tried it.
If you would like some seeds send me a D-mail.
Thomas
I have a question. Have a large pot of passionflowers growing outside. What do I have to do to winterize the plants? I know I have to bring them inside but what about cutting back, etc.... Please advise. Thanks.
