Snow Hits North Central Texas.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

It is snowing as I write, very pretty, I hope it doesn't stick.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

We left several of the deck plants out trusting the weatherman would be right and the snow and cold wouldn't come this far. Wrong! The were getting snowed on this morning so I ran out and covered them with a sheet until I can move them inside later.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

We're supposed to get snow on Friday. The bunnies will be thrilled! Me - well, not so much, but then I grew up with "real" winters, and really don't miss them! LOL

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

This is the earliest I remember getting snow. In 2004 we had some on Dec 4th. I wouldn't care if it never snowed!

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Me too, it is pretty but a real mess too, my plants are all out there, didn't think it would snow today, the temperature is 38 at our place so they are O.K., they have to come in sometime today.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Well, I was going to pick the last of my tomatoes and move the plants inside this morning since it wasn't supposed to do anything til this evening. Wrong!!

Thankfully, it's stopped and it's starting to melt, but it was pretty when it was coming down. Bad to drive in, though.

It was really pretty, wasn't it? I only have one "tender" potted plant, a huge DragonWing Begonia, and I hauled it into the house last night. Winter officially arrives (for me) when the Begonia comes in. :-)

Carla

Big Sandy, TX(Zone 8a)

I only have about a hundred plants to bring in, that's all.

Canyon Lake, TX(Zone 8b)

I'll take snow over 27º any day. Keeping fingers crossed that it snows all night Friday night until the sun comes up Saturday morning. Head Cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower can take 27º with no wind chill. I have some smaller young tender greens and beets that I'll need to cover Friday evening. Onions, garlic, spinach, strawberries, herbs, marigolds, pansies and Satsuma trees will have to fend for themselves.

I still like dry weather. Adding water is far better than trying to take it away. It is way too wet here already.

Y'all stay warm and dry, hear.

Jerry

Dallas, TX

I'm with you Jerry. I brought in my citrus, bananas and a few other super tender things at the beginning of Nov. (though I really need to get some better lights set up for them). Earlier today I grabbed a few of my more tender potted plants and threw them in the garage with the lights on... the rest will have to sink or swim on its own - to mix a metaphor badly. Oh well, at least now I can start the "great winter clean-up and spring prep" (raking and mulching leaves, cleaning out the rain barrels and larger tanks, laying irrigation line, building a few more raised beds) instead of “tending” to everything :) - no rest for the wicked!

Well....my DH has been in IL for over a month. Guess what day he's flying home.... Did you guess Friday afternoon? I don't even like to drive in rain, much less snow. I want to go get him, but I'll be a basket case if it's slippery. He's going to try to get a Sat. flight.
I have most everything under cover, Xmas lights in the ghs, but haven't put the heaters out yet. I have some halogen lights too, but I'm afraid I'll start a fire! So much crammed in, no room for anything else.
Snow looks so pretty, Stephanie.

Big Sandy, TX(Zone 8a)

With the day temps being in he 40s and 50s I don't think the snow is going to stick to much. Bridges and overpasses.

Rowlett, TX(Zone 8a)

LOL, Kenboy!

Carla

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Thanks for reminder, Kenboy....I'm going to think of you tomorrow afternoon everytime I hit another overpass on my way to the airport!!!!!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Hopefully they will sand or de-ice if they do have ice. Be careful on your way. When I have guest come in DFW we make them use the transports and pick them up in downtown FW. I hate airport traffic, no one knows where they are going and are reading signs and changing lanes.

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Thanks for suggestion, Sheila. Looks like it's going to be outta here by 4, and then just really, really cold! Down to the 20s tomorrow evening. His plane lands a little after 4:30. If it's still looking slippery, I'll ask my NYC neighbor to drive me out there!
I spent the day shoving things into our temp ghs. DD dropped by around 5 and stayed half hour. I then turned on the lights out back and finished up. Came in to watch the news before I had to get ready for garden club Xmas party at 7. Woke up at 6:45!!!! Can't believe I fell asleep in the chair! Too late to go, so I opted to read yesterday and today's newspapers. This has to be the year I quit babying so many plants thru the winter. I'll be up most of the night. I put heaters in ghs and now I'm worried that they'll some how tip over and start a fire. Be glad when DH gets home......

Considering the driving conditions a taxi would seem to be the way to go for your husband. At least you would not need to get out. The more people that are off the streets the better.

Mid Gulf Coast, TX(Zone 9b)

It's snowing in Port Lavaca.............not sticking just coming down really hard....it's raining also and that's probably what's keeping it from sticking.......just hope it doesn't get down to freezing......the roads will be a mess because all the rednecks with 4-wheel drive will be out!!!!!

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

We just had one 5 minute flurry. Doesn't look like it'll amount to much. 'Neighbor volunteered her husband to go get DH. He has 4-wheel. I think I'll be okay, BUT I'm taking DH's truck....not my new car!

Divernon, IL(Zone 5b)

My daughter just called from Texas this morning reporting snow in Houston.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

It's snowing quite hard in Houston! It wasn't sticking this morning, but it sure is now. The bunnies are having a great time playing in it. :-)

This photo was taken about 10 minutes after the snow started accumulating. There's quite a bit more on the ground now!

Wow! This is amazing -- I'm on the OK border and we did not get any snow. Freezing temps. -- yes. But, this afternoon it is 45 degrees. Not bad!

Enjoy your snow while you have it, cause you know, it doesn't happen very often. :)

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

That's so neat, Marilyn! Hope your plants are protected. I guess I just don't think of snow in Houston!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

On the news just now they said Houston got 4" of snow!! I used to live in Houston and remember it snowing one year aroun 1970 and it hadn't snowed for 12 years prior to that. So grown people were out playing in it and they closed all the schools etc. Really scary driving down there because they don't have equipment to de-ice the roads.

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

DH's plane "was missing a piece of trim" and they had to deplane in Chicago. He was a few hours late on 'nother plane, but it was okay since we didn't get any accumulation of snow and roads were clear.....so I drove my new car to pick him up! Backyard's lite up like circus tents. Just hope the little heaters keep the temps up enough. 'Have done all I could do to shelter most. Hope everyone's plants and people stay warm and dry tonight.... I think my brugs will survive.....

Looks like happy plants.

Baytown, TX(Zone 9a)

We got snow in Houston, and in Baytown............It stuck. Makes for a pretty picture but a muddy back yard today! I posted pictures over on the Tropical zone gardening forum.

My banana trees are now brown. They will come back in the Spring! They line the back yard completely. We have over 90 but last year we lost ten due to the freeze.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Jeanne, the bananas you shared with me in 08 are doing great. Wilted from the snow an freeze but I know they will be back next spring with an extra 3-4 each. Same for the sago palms.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Those you shared with me last year plus the sago palms are doing wonderful. They come back plus,

Christi

Baytown, TX(Zone 9a)

Good Christi! I am glad that yours are doing well! Most of them will come back plus increase. If they don't I'm going to replace them with hardy hibiscus!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Did your hoop houses work on your plants bigbubbles?

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

They did work! I think the ground warmth had a lot more to do with it (than my expertise) this time, tho. Most everything outside is mushy, but the pots and plants in-ground that are in the hoops look great. DH did think we needed to get another heater for the big house....that I expanded. We just need to get it before we get another freeze.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Great! You did such a great job I was hoping it did.

Kingston, OK(Zone 7a)

Every thing up here is brown. Will get down into the teen's tonight and tomorrow night. 38 the high.
Did not get any snow like you all did. Maybe my frost weed will make a show tomorrow.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

I hope so Ted, it sure is pretty.
