Which field guide for Western Birds?

(Sharon)SouthPrairie, WA(Zone 7a)

My Roger Tory Peterson field guides are getting a bit old (some names have even been changed!) and I need another field guide, which is on my Xmas list. What do you all find to be the best that you are using? Thanks.

Hi PNW, I would say Sibleys (western) or if you prefer real photos then Kaufman (north american) or Stokes (western).

National Geographic is another good guide especially for range maps (north american)

Make sure you get the latest edition whichever you chose. Hope this helps.

thank you. I will check the local library to see if I can see copies. I tend to like the drawings rather than the pictures as they seem to show the minor differences better. Sharon

There's a new edition of the National Geographic guide either just out or due out very soon - supposed to be a big improvement on the current edition, with lots of the pics re-drawn.

I just received Kenn Kaufmann's Field Guide to Birds of N. Am. and it is pretty nice.
