We went to my in-laws for Thanksgiving and I had a blast taking pictures of all the birds there that I don't usually see. They also had this little woodpecker, I think they said it was a Red-Bellied Woodpecker, which seems strange since there's no red on his belly. Anyway, he became my favorite subject as he just sat and posed for me over and over. Here's my woodpecker buddy.
trip to Florida
Great pictures DD!!! It's so nice to see birds you wouldn't normally see.
I love the Osprey in that beautiful tree.
The Red-bellied Woodpecker does have some red on the belly but it's farther down and not always easy to see.
The Great Blue Heron in your 2nd pic is beautiful and the reflection shot is wonderful! The Cormorants are always nice to see.
That might be a Little Blue Heron (dark morph) in the 4th shot, we'll see.
Thanks so much for posting these!
Hi Pelletory,
Thanks for looking. I had a blast and everyone knew to look for me outside by the canal with my camera if I was missing. I don't think I've ever seen any of these Florida birds in person before so it was a neat part of the trip for me.
Is the Cormorant the 5th picture down? The black bird with the white on his wings? I think he's the same one I have in the water where you can only see him from the neck up.
I'm putting the rest up on my picasa page and will post the link when done if anyone's interested in seeing the rest. I just posted some of my favorite bird one's here.
DD, I really enjoyed your photos. Glad your MIL had an osprey stop by for you, they're amazing to see. Loved your herons and cormorant too. That little wp is just adorable.
Yes, that is a Double-crested Cormorant in your photos. Interesting thing about these ducks is that they nest in high trees and must walk on the water to take off. I get a kick out of just watching them.
Great job.
I have really enjoyed seeing all of your pictures. You captured a wonderful variety and I would like to have a link to the rest of them. I have visited Florida in the past but that was pre-birdwatching...your photos make me want to return.

Thanks Ducbucin, for your comments and id'ing the Cormorant. I took tons of pictures of him hoping some would turn out ok since he was hiding in that tree.
I have all the pictures posted at the link below, if anyone's interested. Of course, I did take some family shots too that are included. Tons of my little woodpecker and the blue herons along with some giant turtles and of course, alligators.

Thanks Dellrose. Links above. We went 2 years ago but it was such a quick trip for my Uncle's 70th birthday that we basically drove there, attended the party, and then drove home. I didn't see anything but a short visit with family and the freeway.
Hi DD, the 5th pic looks like an Anhinga. http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Anhinga/id
Thanks for the correction Pelle, guess I should learn to count better!
Nice pics. your fav is also mine, the water looks great. Where were you visiting in Florida?
thanks for the names to go with my pictures everyone!
GP, we were in Rotunda West, just North of Ft. Meyers. I love to visit but hate the drive.
DevilDogs - fantastic pics. Not much to add in the way of ID'ing your birds, though, everyone did a good job on that.

Thanks Hack!
I have a favor to ask everyone. I want to print one of these for my in-laws for Christmas. I can't decide between #6, #8, and #11.
Favorite between them?
Thanks,
K
I vote #8. :-)
Thanks Pel...it's actually the one I had on screen at the site I'm going to order from.
11x14 photo canvas. hope it turns out ok.
Great pic to do that with! Let us know how it turns out - that is a nice idea for a present.
Wow! I can see it turning into a treasured family heirloom. That is a sweet picture!
I know! I can't wait to get them!!
That looks soooo good! What a wonderful thing to do!
