Here's a pic.. i didn't want to keep going on the other thread since its about eggs.. Its the best pic i can get. Is it a Roo? or a sweet girl? Its hair looks kinda mushroomy, it can barely see out.. i have to push its hair back to see its pretty black eyes. I've looked at all the sites that explain how to tell but i'm still having trouble figuring it out.

Can you get a close-up pic of its comb, or the whole head area? I generally determine it from comb shape and size. I can't tell from that pic. Pretty in any case!

Joplin, MO(Zone 6b)

lol i'll try.. its pretty camera shy. I've been trying for months to get a pic of its beautiful eyes.

Joplin, MO(Zone 6b)

ooo maybe this will help.. its a side pic.. this was in July I'll post the next one i've got too.. and to be honest.. i can't see a comb at all. Never really thought about that before.. but i've seen it when it was drippy wet like a drowned rat.. i didn't see a comb.. but then if its tiny & black.. i probably didn't notice.. i'll have to check for that tomorrow.

it refuses to look at teh camera.. here's a close up from the side. I'll try to find someone to hold its head still tomorrow while i get a pic from the front.

I'd bet my last dime on pullet. All of my roos by that stage had a bumpy lumpy comb, all warty looking. She's got nothing that I can see. It should be pushing up from the base the beak. Unless it's a lot younger than it looks, I'm about 95% sure it's a hen.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

I'm assuming full silkie and not mixed breed....what I was saying applied to my full silkie roos, and that looks like a full silkie to me, but I'm just checking...

Joplin, MO(Zone 6b)

idk.. i got her from a local hatchery... as in a farmer who sells chickens for a living now.. i'm not sure he's sell pure breeds... my EE's were suppose to be pullets.. but i've got 3 roos & 2 girls. I do have to say this silkie is exceptionally sweet. My last one wasn't. So whether she's a pure breed or not.. I want more of her. She is a bantam.. that last pic was from July.. she was only 3 months old there. She's now.. 7 months.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Hmmm....so at 3 months the comb might not be really developed, but at 7 mo it should be. I'd check again for any evidence of a comb if you can get close enough, but with my white silkie roo, it's obvious even from a distance.

Conroe, TX

I say hen. And usually by 6 months and up a roo will start to crow, although we have some cochins that started crowing at 2 months, it was the cutest thing.

Lodi, United States

It would help to see a more recent picture--but my feeling is pullet too. Another way to tell is by the way they hold themselves--the pullets tend to pull their heads and necks down--sort of squatty. While the cockerels hold their necks upright and walk in a more bouncy, sprightly way.

The only problem with the comb is that some less well bred Silkies have single combs, instead of the true "walnut" one. So the comb doesn't show as clearly under all the fluff until it really takes off.

Joplin, MO(Zone 6b)

The first pic was taken 3 days ago.. i'll get a better one soon if I can get her to agree.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Sigh....Catscan bests me yet again....

Joplin, MO(Zone 6b)

my little black silkie that came from the feed store never had a comb either.. & it was a roo. We looked & looked for one but there was nothing there. (That was a few years back) We thought it was a girl originally but it started crowing at about 4 months.

Lodi, United States

That's right, Moxon...I am ALWAYS right.

Which is why Angel, one of the Silkie "roos" that ZZ asked me to sex, is now happily brooding her own eggs in Antioch.

But if you put it all together--upright posture, windswept top knot and spreading walnut comb--well, if your roodar is working.....Zap!

Joplin, MO(Zone 6b)

how do you tell if its upright posture when the darn thing is a little pig & nearly always has its beak in the ground hunting for food? :)

u know i did get a very tiny white egg today... would her eggs be white (if its a girl)?

Lodi, United States

The eggs are white or whitish...or pinkish...or even brownish...so it could be...and the girls are "always" head down eating.

I think it is a pullet. But a nice side view would help.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

That is interesting about your black combless silkie roo! I haven't had one like that, but it does go to show the wonderful diversity in our feathered friends, which always keeps us on our toes!

Thank you Catsy, yes of course dear, you are always right. (pats Catsy on head)

{{{just let her think that, it keeps the peace}}}}

Richmond, TX

From the Feathersite pictures, I vote for pullet too.

Catscan and Cmoxen please go to the thread can`t get a egg to save my butt and help me sex my silkies,I posted pictures and they are almost three months old,Thanks green

Joplin, MO(Zone 6b)

well i obviously haven't gotten the picture.. btwn the weather & hospital visits i just haven't had time. BUT it rained one day like 4 inches.. & Silkie refused to go in. I caught her (yes i said her) after much sliding around in the mud & found out that she has a very small low nearly flat comb. She has also established a routine.. each night she crawls into the nesting box i built, gathers all the fake eggs together into a little pile & fluffs out over them, tucking her little head under her wing. Every other morning for a week she has left a very tiny white egg behind when she gets up. I've been letting them out before daylight when i get up to give mom her meds so i know when she gets off the nest. so delimia solved.. Miss silkie is a girl.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Woo hoo! Eggcellent! And she's even laying for you!! See, Catsy, you and I still have it going on. We are on a roll.

It's so cute when they make egg piles and fluff on them.

Joplin, MO(Zone 6b)

she's adorable! if I wouldn't have 6 roos suddenly flying at my head form the shock of the flash I'd take a pic of her.. might still try it. I guess if they land on my head they can't do too much damage.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Nothing a shower won't cure... (giggle)

Joplin, MO(Zone 6b)

o wow.. u can giggle! for some reason i didn't picture moxon giggling.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

I have to suppress it when Catscan is around. She might discipline me. :-)

Joplin, MO(Zone 6b)

i won't tell! :)

Lodi, United States

Mooooxxxxxonnnn!

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Yes Mistress Catscan?! I was very seriously studying, Ma'am. Seriously. With great consternation and focus. Yes, indeed. No silliness here. Nope.

Lodi, United States

Very good.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Any particular reason you wanted to check in with me, Mistress Catscan? Do you need something perhaps? A little flan?

{{{{Greykyttyn....put the chocolate cupcakes away before she finds them}}}}

Lodi, United States

Miss Moxon....it has come to my attention that you are indulging in playfulness on the DG Forum....cease at once and return to your studies.

I have just purchased the proper and correct ingredients for a traditional and worthwhile custard...so no more impudent attempts to pull the flan over my eyes....

Greykyttyn! Why are you here? Moxon needs to study! Return to your room at once! I am sure there is something more useful you could be doing....perhaps dusting?

Joplin, MO(Zone 6b)

:p i dusted, vacuumed, did 3 loads of laundry & the dishes already.... cleaned the bathrooms too.

I'm BORED.....

:( *sulks off to my room to pout since Moxon was sent away*

Lodi, United States

Watch your tone, youngkyttyn!

{{{And greykyttyn said she COULDN"T sulk!}}}

Joplin, MO(Zone 6b)

:p

oooo if i'm young.. does that make Catscan an old kyttyn..
(her name does say CAT.)

{{pssst Moxon... where'd ya go?}}

Lodi, United States

It is really discouraging to see such disrespect for her elders in one so young, greykyttyn.

I am afraid you are heading for a Bad End.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Sorry, I had to go to bed to get my beauty sleep. I'm still waiting for it to work. I keep hoping one of these days...

Mistress Catscan....I am sure you are quite mistaken about any sort of playfulness. Why, I was simply checking in on young Greykyttyn to ensure that she was behaving appropriately, and not taking liberties with her youthful status. I think she has been the subject of a Bad Few Days and is therefore entitled to a small amount of leniency. Surely she is not heading for a Bad End. I remember my last Bad End. Oh, it was dreadful...

Joplin, MO(Zone 6b)

:( no disrespect.. just teasing. I'm sorry.

Moxon... your tests will be fine. Your smart, beautiful & such a lovely wonderful person. The beauty sleep doesn't work bc you don't need it. :)

Did i hear right... a little chicken told me Catscan is now on FB? Had a lovely discussion about how wonderful Miss Catscan is also. You never hear a bad thing come out of her mouth. She's always so kind & so much fun to listen too.

hmm... Bad End.... it has been a BFD's... usually i'm very quiet & well behaved.

{{scurries off to see what sort of mischief she can cause before work}}
