Washing Curtains?

I have lace curtains on the windows in the kitchen and when I dust, I wipe them off, but they've been up there for 12 years and are starting to look dirty. Can they be washed? I would put them in lingerie bags and run them on the gentle cycle, but before I do that, I want to make sure that that would be o.k.
