Computer doesn't read printer

Hi Folks, hope someone can solve this mystery. I had my Dell xp 2002 computer worked on after by mistake I deleted windows installer program. Well I'm back up and running but now the thing won't read my hp deskjet 3500 series printer. Tried troubleshooting and said to delete printer and re-install. I did that and used disk and still can't get it to recognize the printer. Advice needs to be simple as I am not computer savy but will write down simple instructions. Thanks in advance for any help.
