Plant ID?

Grapevine, TX(Zone 8a)

I found some nice wildflowers on my mother-in-law's property down in Beeville, while visiting for Thanksgiving. It had just rained, and everything was going crazy after the big drought. Does anyone know what this is? Some sort of salvia?

Another shot... Hard for me to tell how good these are since I am posting them from my phone.

It looks like Salvia coccinea a very lovely and reliable native.

Great! Thanks.

I have been looking for this for a while. There is a good sized patch, and I was thinking about digging up one or two. Does anyone know if they transplant well?

I don't know about the mature plants, how they will transplant, but the new baby plants do transplant very well in Spring, also cuttings are very easy to root.

I'll give it a try. It is a good sized colony, so potting up one or two should be fine.

I always find it particularly exciting to find a wild plant that I can transplant into my landscape. I guess it is the thrill of the hunt! :)

Yes, I love that too, good luck, and if not you can always go back for a second try in the spring.

lol Me, too. Like, duh, it was already growing here, I don't know why it's such a surprise that it will grow in my yard.

If you can get just a stem or two of the salvia, it will grow into a nice little clump very quickly in the spring.
