i put this on the tomato forum but realized too late it belonged here
i got the totally tomatoes catalog and the vermont bean seed company which i did not ask for and which is very limited.
my first seed catalogs
I like the Baker Creek Catalog www.rareseeds.com They say the prices are for 25 seeds but usually you get hundreds.
I am waiting for my BC catalog. Hope it gets here soon. It's always a work of art.
I called they said Dec. I hate the wait and then I have to scramble to get whats available on my website. I use them first but will buy from other companies if I need to. I only start plants that are OP, and no GMOs. Their catalog is the only one that I have found that clearly states that but I'm sure there are others. Some companys only have internet catalogs but I really like to actually have a hard copy. HAPPY THANKSGIVING
I like to have a hard copy also. That way I can look at it wherever I am and share it with friends.
I'm waiting for my Baker Creek catalogue too. They were out of them by the time I asked for one last spring and I'm hoping they haven't forgotten that I want one. I've gotten Seedsavers Exchange, Pinetree, Vermont Bean and Seed and Totally Tomatoes. Pinetree has some interesting new varieties this year, but I also order a lot from Gourmet Seed International. Johnny's seems expensive to me.
Usually they come around Christmas; this year they're early! I'm still picking some chard and watching my young spinach grow!

Last night I looked at Baker Creek online and the whole thing has been changed. Not for the better either IMHO. My impression is that they are striving to look like every other website while I enjoyed the old fashioned straight forward format they had before. I've never seen their catalog but I imagine that will be messed up too. Prices were up and the selection was reduced.
Oh dear.... We'll see what it looks like if I ever get one. As I recall they had some varieties that I couldn't find elsewhere. I hope they still do!
Twiggys-don't say that, their catalog last year was "new" glossy and more commercial looking. I liked their older catalogs that were on paper similar to newspaper, when I called to order some seeds I mentioned the new look. They said it was do to picture quality. Maybe if enough of us complain they'll listen, it seemed more wholesome even though I realize you don't grow the catalog.
GG-do you have to be a member of SSE to get a catalog?
No, apparently you don't because I'm not. I ordered from them last year, though. The catalogue does imply that there are a lot more varieties available from members.
I would write and tell Baker Creek that you enjoyed their other style of catalog. I think they are very responsive to clients.
The "new cart" seems to be something thrown up on the site in a hurry because they are frantically working on the catalog. With their farm, Bakersville, the magazine and the new store, I think they are probably very swamped!!!
I looked at BC's new website and there is less of a selection. Maybe there will be more in the catalog. I just love their products and they way they do business. I'm waiting for their catalog to orders seeds, they are my first choice. If they don't carry it then I look elsewhere. Maybe I'll try SSE so I can get a catalog.
I came over to see if anyone is planting pepper seeds anytime soon. Last year I planted right after the new year and they took forever. I think Im going to have a go at planting them in a week or so.Going to use some bottom heat for the first time too...or Im mulling that over.
As for BC...I did not like that big( wide) catalog at all last year. You could not stack it up with the rest and sit and make a list. It annoyed me to no end. Thanks for asking. lol...held that in almost a year.
The guy has some wierd fettish for the big squash too. At least he is easily ammused ;-o
I loved seeing different stuff from around the world. There is great food all over our planet. God is good that way. LOL
