Is this molting or feather pecking?

I haven't seen any pecking but its been cold so I haven't been outside with them much. I did see my rooster peck at one of the hens today and take some feathers but I think it was a failed mounting attempt. The 2 black hens are the highest in the pecking order and the blueish brown is at the bottom. She and one of the black hens have the most feathers missing. Earlier in the month both of the black hens had almost all their neck feathers missing. Ive seen no blood on anyone. So could this be molting, pecking, of an over zealous roo?

Hummmm. It seems like my pullets molt out their tail feathers first--then their primary and secondary flight feathers. I've never noticed their heads and necks looking terribly bare. But I have noticed my roosters remove feathers from pullets and even other roosters heads and necks.

I think it looks more like feather picking....but I could be wrong. How are their flight feathers?

...and I just remembered there is something called a "neck molt' that young birds sometimes get. Let me look it up.

Yep, part way through this article they discuss "neck molting" and other reasons for loss of feathers. It is a British site, I think.

Their flight feathers all seem to be ok. Mainly the necks backs and legs seem thin and appear "messy" The black girls are usually very full and a beautiful glossy black. The lighter feather looks like some kind of undercoat? They also have feathers hanging off various parts of their body(mainly back and chest) that can be easily pulled off and don't seem to be attached.
You can kind of see her back feathers here

Are the feather broken off or just falling out? With pecking you'll see some broken off feathers... with molting you get that feather pillow effect of bits and pieces falling off.

My hens always seemed to just loose their body feathers, kept most of their wing feathers... and always during the coldest weather. Made me want to put little sweaters on 'em...

Ours just went through a molt and their necks looked like that.

Caren, They are molting their feathers. I usually add some dry kitten cat food to the feed for extra protein which helps the feathers grow back..I get the kind that has fish flavors in it. Mine comes from Walmart that has several kinds of fish flavors in a small bag. I feed all my chickens, peacocks, turkeys, and my 2 ducks kitten food all year long.
I also feed my birds during the cold winter months..warm gruel which is cream of wheat, oatmeal, powder milk, and chicken scratch all mixed up in a pot like you are cooking it for your family but not this gruel...but not this stuff!!!..LOL.

Moulting. Look closely at the feathers and stubs at the back of her head. See those little white flecks? Those should be new feather 'tubes' flaking off as the new ones come in. She's got them all over her head. In a few days she should be a real sight. Sleek spots and dull spots and draggledy spots. Check and see...

Thank you all! They were defiantly molting their feathers have come back in nicely and have even started laying eggs again. I do still give them kitten food but I will give the gruel a try!
